NRL ‘WAGs’ and children are being released from hotel quarantine on the Gold Coast - straight into another lockdown.
The wives, girlfriends and children of NRL stars who relocated to Queensland last month to keep the 2021 season alive after Sydney was plunged into an extended lockdown have been isolating at the Novotel Hotel in Surfers Paradise for two weeks.
They were being released in stages on Wednesday.
Novotel staff used a shield to try to hide the WAGs from media and gave the women and children a round of applause as they left the hotel on buses.
The partners will be reunited with their husbands and boyfriends at one of the three hotels in the Queensland ‘bubble’ - the Mercure Gold Coast, Novotel South Bank and Novotel Twin Waters.
But with South East Queensland in lockdown, the WAGs’ first taste of freedom will be limited.
“They’ll be subject to the same lockdown rules as everyone living in South East Queensland,” an NRL spokesman said.
“They’ll be able to leave the hotels but only for things such as exercise and essential shopping. They’re basically going from one lockdown to another.”
Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young warned the NRL risked being booted out of Queensland for breaching quarantine rules after NRL WAGs were photographed soaking up the sun and passing food to each other between balconies at the Novotel.
The NRL revoked balcony privileges for the 500 people staying at the hotel in response to the warning.
