A new initiative from Cairns Hockey’s Aspire to be Deadly team will aim to provide a safe space for school-age players, while building self-confidence and reinforcing positive life skills.
Located on the second floor in the old clubhouse at the Cairns Hockey Facility, the Cairns Aspire Hockey Hub and Yarning Place was officially opened this week.
Aspire program co-ordinator Wes Ferns said the hub was a supervised and safe space, where mentors delivered activities supporting Aspire’s ‘Live Well, Learn Well, Lead Well’ initiative.
“It’s a place where young people can engage with each other and share their challenges with the Aspire team,” he said.

“It’s where the common interest of sport can assist in driving some positive social experiences and support important inclusive outcomes within the community.”
Ferns said the hub would have a focus on education, wellbeing and leadership.
“We can teach the kids how to cook, they can do their homework, or they can do one of our workshops,” he said.

“From there, they can go straight to training and we’ve got the bus there so we can drop them home after training as well.”
All young people aged 15 years and under were welcome to join the hub, provided they agree to take direction and behave well.
The Cairns Aspire Hockey Hub and Yarning Place will be open between the end of school and the start of training, from 3-5.30pm, every Monday and Tuesday afternoon for the duration of the Cairns Hockey winter season, starting next week.
