ANOTHER KIWI JOINS THE SUPER NETBALL COMPETITION

The Giants have finalised their playing list for next season with the signing of another New Zealander, experienced midcourter Whitney Souness.

Souness becomes the eighth Kiwi to make the move into Super Netball and the second New Zealand player to join the Giants for 2026 alongside veteran defender Jane Watson.

While she was not named in New Zealand’s 2025-26 squad, Souness has represented the Silver Ferns since 2017.

The 28-year-old was most recently playing for the Central Pulse in the ANZ Premiership.

“Whitney is an incredibly smart and dynamic athlete who brings with her a high level of international experience and a real calmness in pressure moments,” Giants head coach Nerida Stewart said.

“She’s someone who can seamlessly link attack and defence, and her ability to control tempo and deliver with precision is exactly what we need to strengthen our midcourt.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing how she thrives in the Super Netball environment and what she can bring to our group both on and off the court.”

SILVER FERN JOINS LIGHTNING

Silver Ferns defender Karin Burger has officially become the latest Kiwi to join the exodus to Super Netball, confirming her signing with the Sunshine Coast Lightning for 2026.

The Lightning confirmed the signing of Burger - the seventh New Zealander confirmed to be playing Super Netball next season - on Monday afternoon.

The Kiwi was widely expected to link with the Lightning following the departure of former Diamond Tara Hinchliffe to the Melbourne Mavericks and heads to Australia in stunning form, having helped the Tactix to the ANZ Premiership title this season.

Burger said leaving New Zealand was a big decision but was looking forward to playing in Australia.

“I’m really excited to start this new chapter in the SSN (Super Netball) with Sunshine Coast Lighting,” she said.

“They have so much talent and experience in their group and there’s also some personal familiarity in the Sunny Coast for me.

“It was a big decision to make, but I’m looking forward to the opportunity to test and develop my game playing alongside and against some world-class players.”

SUPER SHOT STARS COMPLETES MAVS ATTACK

Super shot star and Tongan international Uneeq Palavi completes the Melbourne Mavericks’ new-look attack for next season after being elevated to a full playing contract.

Palavi has been promoted from Mavs’ training partner and temporary replacement player to the team’s contracted 10, joining Shimona Jok and recruit Reilley Batcheldor in a refreshed goaling line-up following the departure of Eleanor Cardwell and Sasha Glasgow.

The 23-year-old’s signing leaves just one spot left to fill on the Mavericks’ roster for 2026 with foundation midcourter Maisie Nankivell the only current player yet to be re-signed.

Palavi has established herself as a serious super shot threat in her appearances across the past two years, nailing 37 two-point shots this season – the equal fifth highest in the league – in the 13 games that she took to the court.

FIREBIRDS TORCHED AFTER PULSE RAID

Cheeky barbs have been fired from across the ditch to the Queensland Firebirds after the Super Netball team’s signing of two Silver Ferns from the same New Zealand-based team.

The Firebirds last week announced they had secured three New Zealand players - defender Kelly Jackson, midcourter Maddy Gordon and goal attack Te Paea Selby-Rickit for 2026.

Jackson (nee Jury) and Gordon had both been playing for the Pulse in New Zealand’s ANZ Premiership.

A not so subtle sledge from the Pulse.
A not so subtle sledge from the Pulse.

The Pulse were quick to respond to the trans-Tasman recruitment with a not-so-subtle dig at the Firebirds in the bio on their social media page.

Underneath their title as a professional sports team, the Pulse referred to themselves as “The Queensland Firebirds’ favourite sports team”.

The Firebirds will have five internationals all up in their line-up for 2026.

GIANTS SIGN WATSON

The sixth Kiwi has officially signed a Super Netball contract for next season, with the Giants announcing defender Jane Watson would join their ranks next season.

Watson farewelled the Tactix at the end of the season, with speculation immediately starting that the World Cup winner could join the Giants next season.

At 35, Watson is no spring chicken.

But she comes off a career-best season in the ANZ Premiership after helping the Tactix to the New Zealand title and former Silver Ferns captain Casey Kopua - who turned 40 during her surprise cameo with the Giants earlier this year - showed that age is no barrier for a savvy player.

FIREBIRDS ADD THIRD SILVER FERN TO FINALISE ROSTER

The Queensland Firebirds have finalised signings with the announcement of a third New Zealand player, giving them a full-time contract list containing 50 per cent of imports.

The announcement on Friday morning that Silver Ferns squad member Te Paea Selby-Rickit would join the club for next season gives the Firebirds three New Zealanders, an Englishwoman and Ugandan on their list for next season, while just three Queensland products have made the cut.

It’s a risky move for the Queensland Netball-owned side - whose coach, Kiri Willis, is also a New Zealander - although one that gives them a playing group capable of mixing it with any team in the league.

The Firebirds have made the Super Netball finals just once in the league’s nine seasons and not since 2018.

With Netball New Zealand’s recent ruling that select players could head across the Tasman to play in Super Netball without losing their eligibility for Silver Ferns selection, a flood of Kiwi players has taken up the option, with Code Sports estimating Kiwis will make up 10 per cent of the league next season.

But with Super Netball promoting itself as the best league in the world, the player mix is a boon for fans, who will be watching the best of the best go at each other each week.

Goaler Selby-Rickit, 22, was part of New Zealand’s 2019 World Cup-winning team and was last week named in the Silver Ferns’ squad for 2025-26.

“I’m super excited to be joining the Queensland Firebirds and getting stuck into the 2026 SSN season,” Selby-Rickit said.

“It’s a new challenge that I’m really looking forward to. New team, new environment, and a great opportunity to play against the best.”

Wills said Selby-Rickit’s experience and proven ability were huge assets to the Firebirds squad.

“She’s a constant threat in the circle who combines court-craft and shooting accuracy to be a playmaker and scorer,” Wills said.

“Te Paea is excited to show what she can do in SSN and I know the purple family will be eager to see what she can deliver on court.

“Te Paea completes a roster which will help us build on the foundations we established in 2025. I’m excited to get started with this group and seeing what we achieve in 2026.”

THUNDERBIRDS ADD ANOTHER STAR INTERNATIONAL TO THEIR ROSTER

Adelaide Thunderbirds have landed another international star with the signing of Silver Ferns vice-captain and midcourter Kate Heffernan to complete their playing roster for 2026.

In another list coup for the Thunderbirds, Heffernan is the second newly-signed overseas player to join the team for next season after South African international and the UK Super League’s leading goal scorer Elmere van der Berg.

As the invasion of Kiwi players entering Super Netball continued, Heffernan is the fourth player from across the ditch to so far join the Australian league for next year with more expected to follow.

A tall and versatile centre/ wing defence, the 181cm Heffernan fills the vacant midcourt position on the Thunderbirds’ list left by retired premiership captain Hannah Petty.

Heffernan, who has played 39 Tests for the Silver Ferns, will be the fourth international on the Adelaide list alongside van der Berg and Jamaican defensive pair Latanya Wilson and Shamera Sterling-Humphrey.

The 25-year-old, who also made a pair of appearances for New Zealand women’s cricket team in 2018, said she was excited to get the chance to develop her game in Super Netball.

“I have watched this team for a while now and I can’t wait to play with them,” Heffernan said. “The opportunity to join the SSN is exciting and I think a real opportunity to push myself and see where I can grow and take my game further.

“I have loved playing for the Southern Steel (in the ANZ Championship), and it was a real honour to play 100 games for my home team.

“While it was a very tough decision to make, I am looking forward to a bit of a change on and off the court and can’t wait to get to Adelaide and meet all the girls and management later this year.”

FIREBIRDS LAND FIRST SILVER FERN SIGNING

The Queensland Firebirds have become the first club to announce a Silver Ferns signing outside of the expected return of Grace Nweke, with confirmation outstanding defender Kelly Jackson will don the purple dress in 2026.

At 192cm, Jackson (nee Jury), adds both height and depth to a Firebirds defensive unit that already includes two-Test Diamond Ruby Bakewell-Doran and emerging ‘keeper Isabelle Shearer.

A three-time winner of the Dame Lois Muir supreme award as the Kiwis’ best netballer – New Zealand’s equivalent of the Liz Ellis Diamond – and ANZ Premiership player of the year in 2022 after winning a second title with the Te Wananga o Raukawa Pulse, Jackson is rated among the best defenders in the world and her signing is a coup for the Firebirds.

She joins Super Netball next season having gained an exemption from the national body to play in Australia while remaining eligible for Silver Ferns selection and was on Monday named in the Kiwis’ squad for 2025-26.

The Firebirds thanked Netball New Zealand for their support in allowing Jackson to pursue the opportunity of playing Super Netball.

WORLD’S BEST SHOOTER RE-COMMITS TO FEVER

West Coast Fever have confirmed the return of star shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard for a ninth season, reuniting the shooting combination that led to their 2022 Super Netball premiership.

Fowler-Nembhard won a seventh Stacey Marinkovich Medal and led the league’s goal scoring during the regular season, underlining her status as arguably the best shooter in the world, all despite missing the first two matches of the season.

After the announcement earlier this week that former Fever goal attack Sasha Glasgow would return to the west after an injury-riddled two-year stint with the Melbourne Mavericks, the Fever are expected to lock in the remainder of their grand final side.

Fowler-Nembhard said Perth had become her second home and she was “beyond grateful” to pull on the green dress again.

“I can’t wait to get back out there with my Fever Family and chase another championship with our amazing Green Army behind us every step of the way,” she said.

Head Coach Dan Ryan said Fowler-Nembhard had inspired all at the club with her strength and resilience and had been a driving force behind the team’s success.

“She’s our spiritual leader and instils so much confidence in those around her with her passion, presence and positive energy,” Ryan said.

GUN KIWI STICKS WITH SWIFTS

Grace Nweke says she has “unfinished business” at the Swifts and a desire to help add to the club’s legacy was behind her decision to return to the club next season.

The Swifts announced the re-signing of the Kiwi trailblazer on Monday morning, following her announcement in the Silver Ferns squad.

Nweke, who was named the Swifts’ MVP at the club’s gala dinner on Saturday night, made the move across the ditch to play Super Netball in 2025 in a bid to improve her game, despite knowing she was likely to have to sacrifice eligibility for the Silver Ferns.

But with New Zealand’s ANZ Premiership facing an uncertain future – and the second consecutive season of reduced games – Nweke’s move was among factors that forced Netball New Zealand to change its eligibility rules and allow athletes playing abroad the opportunity to be considered for Silver Ferns selection through a formal exemption process.

LUCKLESS STAR LEAVES MAVS

Goaler Sasha Glasgow will return to the West Coast Fever in 2026.

The Melbourne Mavericks confirmed the goal attack would not be making a return to the club next season after two years with Super Netball’s youngest franchise.

Then later on Monday it was announced the 27-year-old would reunite with her former club and coach Dan Ryan in the west following the departure of Jamaican goal attack Shanice Beckford.

Glasgow played with West Coast from 2021 to 2023 and was a member of Fever’s 2022 premiership team when she was named the grand final MVP.

It marks the end of a tough stint in Melbourne for Glasgow, whose first season with the Mavericks was ruined after she suffered a fractured leg in a pre-season practice game and was sidelined for the rest of the year.

YOUNG STAR’S MOVE LOCKED IN

Diamonds training invitee Lucy Austin has landed at the Giants, the club confirming widespread speculation of her signing on Sunday afternoon.

A two-time premiership player with the Thunderbirds, Austin rejected an offer to remain in Adelaide, instead moving to the Giants to replace departing goaler Jo Harten.

FORMER DIAMOND MOVING ON FROM LIGHTNING

Former Diamonds defender Tara Hinchliffe has informed the Lightning she will leave the club to pursue other Super Netball opportunities.

Hinchliffe, who played a single Test with the Diamonds in 2023 before rupturing her ACL, had arguably her most consistent Super Netball season in 2025 but the re-signing of Ash Ervin and presence of Aussie team stalwart Courtney Bruce means she may have had few opportunities next season and has pursued a starting spot.

It’s understood she could be headed to the Mavericks, where she would reunite with former Queensland Firebirds clubmate Kim Brown (Jenner).

Jessie Grenvold, the Mavericks 11th player this year is to get the final spot ahead of the unlucky Laruen Parkinson, who only made her Mavericks debut at the end of this season after an ACL injury.

The Lightning are believed to be in discussions with Silver Ferns defender Karin Burger, a move that would again give them one of the best defensive combinations in the competition.

Hinchliffe needs strong court time if she’s to press for a Diamonds squad return ahead of benchmark competitions at the Commonwealth Games next year and a home World Cup in 2027.

FEVER STAR SHOWN THE DOOR

West Coast Fever has farewelled Jamaican goal attack Shanice Beckford.

The Fever announced on Thursday. Beckford would not be offered a new contract for 2026.

Beckford joined the Fever in 2024 and played 32 games over two seasons, including last week’s grand final loss to the Melbourne Vixens.

West Coast Fever General Manager Sue Gaudion said it was a difficult decision for the club.

“Undoubtably the decision not to offer Shanice a contract for next season has been one of the toughest in my time at West Coast Fever.,” Gaudion said.

“Performance on the court is one aspect of high-performance sport but it is also important to have great human beings. Shanice is without doubt one of those.”

Beckford said: “I must admit I’m feeling a bit disappointed with the recent news but that’s the nature of sport. I leave with no regrets, only gratitude and excitement for what’s next,” she said.

FIREBIRDS AXE TRIO, BIG NAMES LIKELY INCOMING

Queensland Firebirds are expected to target key players in each third of the court after announcing the release of Hulita Veve, Tippah Dwan and Ashlee Barnett on Thursday.

With Kiwi coach Kiri Wills at the helm, the Firebirds are expected to be among the clubs to land New Zealand players for next season, with rumours as many as three could be headed for Nissan Arena.

Silver Ferns defender Kelly Jackson is among those having been mentioned as in the Firebirds’ view.

While none of the releases are particularly surprising, the departure of co-captain Veve, in particular, is tough for the 2016 premiership player, whose Super Netball career ended with a ruptured ACL in training towards the end of the season.

Veve, who became a mother to two young boys following the 2016 campaign, was a training partner for years and had almost given up on her dream of earning a Super Netball deal before being added to the full-time list ahead of the 2024 season.

She was a revelation as a defensive midcourter – winning the players’ player and members’ player of the year awards – with her one-year deal extended and her elevation to the co-captaincy with Ruby Bakewell-Doran for 2025.

YOUNG LIGHTNING JOINS MAVS

Melbourne Mavericks will have a new look to their attack next season after confirming the signing of rising shooting star Reilley Batcheldor.

After it was confirmed on Wednesday Batcheldor would not be returning to the Sunshine Coast Lightning, the Mavericks wasted little time in announcing the 23-year-old would join the club in 2026.

An impressive long-range shooter, Batcheldor replaces English international Eleanor Cardwell, who has left the club to return to the UK.

MAVS KEEPER QUITS TO CHASE AFLW CAREER

The Melbourne Mavericks’ defensive end is officially set for change in 2026 after foundation goalkeeper Olivia Lewis confirmed she will depart the club – and Super Netball – to pursue an AFLW career.

The former West Coast Fever and Melbourne Vixens defender joined the Mavericks on a two-year deal ahead of their inaugural season and had been among the most consistent players of their first two years.

KEY SWIFT TO REJECT RIVAL’S ADVANCES

– Emma Greenwood

Teigan O’Shannassy is set to reject the approaches of rival clubs and remain with the Swifts in 2026.

The rangy defender’s performances off the bench for the Swifts had rivals circling, offering starting spots, but Code Sports understands the 26-year-old is set to remain with the preliminary finalists in a bid to help propel their title charge next season.
