Super Netball signings: Watson signed, sealed and delivers for Sunshine Coast; England captain officially a Fever player

Their moves have been known for months, but Super Netball’s biggest names are officially being recognised as members of their new clubs as contracts are signed following an end to the bitter pay war.

Immediate pay increase for Netball players

Player contracts are flying out of Netball Australia headquarters at a rate of knots after the Collective Player Agreement was finally signed last week, ending one of the most bitter standoffs in the sport’s history.

The pay war, which ultimately claimed former CEO Kelly Ryan, whose resignation was announced last Tuesday, kept players and the eight Super Netball teams in a holding pattern for months, despite deals having been done and rosters decided – in many cases – months ago.

With contracts finally able to be registered, teams can announce player signings, which can be up to three seasons – to the end of the current broadcast deal in 2026.

All 80 players are locked in, with clubs now registering their contracts and NA’s integrity team dotting Is and crossing the Ts before each franchise can announce their players.

Diamonds captain Liz Watson is now officially a Sunshine Coast Lightning player, while internationals Sarah Klau (Swifts), Ruby Bakewell-Doran (Firebirds) and Jamie-Lee Price (Giants) have also been announced.

Super Netball’s position as the best competition in the world continues, with West Coast Fever confirmed rumours that have been swirling around England defender Fran Williams, who captained the Roses in their recent series against South Africa, announcing her two-year deal with the club, while the Giants will officially welcome former Silver Fern Sam Winders for the 2024 season.

With players having gone unpaid for almost three months during the par war, NA and the clubs understand the urgency in registering the deals ahead of the Christmas break, with the athletes desperate to receive backpay on their upgraded deals ahead of the festive season.

With plenty of change this season, teams are desperate to get on the floor and start working on combinations.

For many clubs, that will have to wait, with the Christmas break to come and Diamonds and England Roses players in action in the Netball Nations Cup in London and Leeds in January.

Despite CODE Sports having revealed all roster spots already, the ability for clubs to now promote their stars, as well as the draw for next year’s competition means they can now get on with the job of selling memberships and match tickets for the 2024 season.

Super Netball 2024 starts in April, with the newly formed Melbourne Mavericks to take on the Melbourne Vixens in a Victorian derby, after the Adelaide Thunderbirds start their premiership defence with a clash against the Queensland Firebirds.
