Former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III abruptly sprinted from a live broadcast of the Fiesta Bowl after learning his wife was in labour on Sunday.

Griffin was part of ESPN2’s alternate broadcast of the college match between Michigan and TCUwhen he got a call and had to suddenly leave.

In the broadcast, he can be seen answering his phone despite his three colleagues continuing to talk about the game.

One of the presenters eventually notices and asks: “What are we doing? We’re in the middle of a game.”

Griffin responds: “Sorry guys, I’ve got to go. Wife is going into labour. I’ll see you, baby.”

The announcement sparks a round of enthusiastic congratulations from his colleagues before he breaks out into a full sprint from the ground.

TCU pulled off an all-time upset in the match to make the national championship game in a 51-45 victory over Michigan.

The college started the year at 200/1 outsiders to win the national championship but are now just a win away from hoisting the trophy for the first time since 1938 — a massive 84-years.

Michigan came in as a heavy favourite, the conventional wisdom being that the better-tested Wolverines could use their physical run game to push around TCU. Despite that perceived physical edge, it was Michigan that was pushed around all game long.

TCU looked more prepared, better-coached and more ready for the moment. And Michigan had little answer for the Horned Frogs’ physicality.

In one year of coaching TCU, Sonny Dykes might already have elevated himself to program lore alongside Gary Patterson, who spent 20 years building the Horned Frogs up before he was fired in the middle of last season. At the time, it looked like the program was going stale. The Horned Frogs finished last season 5-7 and missed a bowl for the third straight year.

Even this season, as they started to rack up wins, it was easy to overlook a team that seemed to rely on comebacks and scored few emphatic victories against a weak Big 12 conference.
