Queensland’s Tia Toomey to headline Torian Pro Crossfit event in Brisbane

Commonwealth Games champion and CrossFit star Tia-Clair Toomey will be among 1100 fellow athletes competing in Brisbane this weekend in what she describes as a ‘game-changer.’

The world’s fittest athletes will descend on Brisbane this weekend to compete in the annual Torian Pro CrossFit event.

Around 15,000 fans are expected to flock to the Queensland Tennis Centre at Tennyson from Friday until Sunday to watch some of CrossFit’s biggest stars battle it out for a $30,000 prize pool.

Organisers were forced to move the event from the CrossFit Torian gym in Bowen Hills to Tennyson because of the surge in growing sport’s popularity.

International CrossFit stars such as Queenslander Tia Toomey and Reebok athlete Rich Froning will go up against 1100 other athletes during the three-day tournament.

Competitors will be put through a series of gruelling, sweat-inducing exercises as they race to take out the prized title.

Toomey, 26, was the first winner of the Torian Pro in 2015 and is returning to the competition this weekend following a two-year hiatus.

Crowned the World’s Fittest Woman three times, Toomey will be competing later today in the Friday Night Lights event as she chases another national championship and a CrossFit Games qualifier.

The Commonwealth Games weightlifting gold-medallist said the Torian Pro was the best CrossFit event in Australia.

“I can’t go past but saying this is the best event in Australia and it’s definitely one of the best events in the world,” she said.

“It’s a game changer.

“When an athlete is going into a competition, they want to have the best equipment, the best schedule and the boys (at Torian Pro) know that and do their best to execute that.

“The boys have moved it to Pat Rafter Arena to ensure the spectators are comfortable and they’re going to be watching an incredible show.

“The Torian Pro is one of the best events I’ve been to.”

Organisers of the event describe it as a functional fitness festival, featuring hundreds of accomplished CrossFit athletes as well as food, drink and athletic equipment vendors.

The winners of this weekend’s event will get a share of the $30,000 prize pool, split between the individual, pairs and team divisions.

“The Torian Pro has grown significantly since 2015 and I remember being at the very first one,” Toomey said.

“I won it as an individual female and I was so proud to be a part of it.

“It was also great to be a part of the Brisbane CrossFit community but now as I look back, not just has it evolved into something incredible for Brisbane, but for Australia.

“It’s bringing over international athletes and world champions from our sport.”
