EVEN though off-field scandals continue to frustrate fans, on the field there was some awesome football on show, as unbelievable upsets and terrific touchdown catches dominated in week two of the NFL.

SHADY’S STINGY TIP RECEIPT FOR SALE

Remember LeSean McCoy’s stingy 20-cent tip last week? Well some enterprising person who says his “good friend Tommy Up” gave it to him, has put said receipt on eBay and it looks set to fetch almost $100,000. Incredibly, almost 150 people have bid on the crinkled piece of paper citing the Philadelphia Eagles running back’s shy tipping.

The seller of the receipt plans on putting the money to good use though.

“With your help we’ll be able to leave the largest tip possible to all PYT employees for their hard work and dedication,” the item description reads.

“The only thing we would like to ask on your end is for the winner to write a personalised note or card to the PYT staff, which we give to the staff along with the winning bid/tip.”

RGIII WE HARDLY KNEW YE

At this rate Robert Griffin III could end up in the scrap heap of players whose promise is overshadowed by their constant injury struggles. After suffering a serious knee injury in the playoffs last season, the Washington quarterback has been hit with another setback in week two, this time dislocating his ankle.

“It’s not a fracture and we’ll put a cast on it and see how it goes from there,” said Washington coach Jay Gruden.

Escaping a fracture could save him from having surgery, but team doctors and coaches may be cautious bringing him back. Big things are expected from back up Kirk Cousins who completed 22 of his 33 passes for 250 yards for the rest of the game against Jacksonville.

GOODELL FEELS THE HEAT

It hasn’t been a good week for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. The league’s handling of domestic violence, particularly on the Ray Rice case, has left fans furious and calling for Goodell to resign. Rice was suspended indefinitely after footage was finally released of inside the elevator where the Ravens running back punched his then fiance Janay, though how much the NFL knew about the leaked video is the cause of further outrage.

During week two the hashtag #GoodellMustGo accompanied by a photoshopped image of CoverGirls’ new NFL makeup line parodying the ‘Get Your Game Face On’ slogan went viral online.

AUSSIES IN ACTION

Melbourne boy Brad Wing has continued to perform well for the Steelers. He backed up a fine effort last week, helping set up the game winning field goal, with another solid outing against the Baltimore Ravens. Wing, 23, had four punts for Pittsburgh, averaging over 45 yards.

That average was brought down to 34 yards no thanks to a huge return from Jacoby Jones slicing through the Steelers defence, but it could have been worse had the Aussie not been there to stop Jones in his tracks. Showing off his Aussie Rules skills, the young punter put a nice bump on the Ravens bolter to end his run.

Sydney born offensive guard and Minnesota Vikings rookie David Yankey is still yet to make his debut.

NOBODY PUTS RICHIE IN A CORNER

Superstar Seahawk Richard Sherman hit social media to defend his performance in Seattle’s surprise defeat to San Diego this week. Accused of having their Legion of Boom defence “exposed”, the outspoken cornerback fired back at the criticism.

PETERSON BREAKS SILENCE ON CHILD ABUSE CHARGES

Minnesota have reinstated Adrian Peterson just a few days after initially benching him following charges of child abuse. ‘All Day’ was released on bail, but as the team’s greatest asset, Vikings owners controversially decided to bring him back for team training.

Via social media Peterson spoke for the first time about the shocking details of the case, which has sparked a heated debate in the US that even brought in NBA legend Charles Barkley.

CLASSIC CATCHES GALORE

San Diego were on song as they upset the defending Super Bowl champions Seattle, and leading that highlights reel was Antonio Gates’ incredible grab beating double coverage for a touchdown that was a thing of beauty.

If the Chargers can keep collecting Philip Rivers’ throws like that all season they could be a force to reckon with.

The Miami Dolphins couldn’t back up their week one win against New England, going down to Buffalo in rather disappointing fashion. But wideout Mike Wallace ensured they had something to smile about with this incredible one-handed touchdown catch during the third quarter.

Wallace was not to be outdone by Chicago’s Brandon Marshall who reeled in this Jay Cutler throw with a reaching grab in the end zone. San Francisco were clearly still busy picking up their dropped jaws in the aftermath of the catch, as they blew a good lead to go down 28-20 to the Bears.

JETS REMIND US THAT THEY ARE THE JETS

They’re the team that made ‘butt-fumble’ a thing, and now for their latest embarrassing football fail, the New York Jets screwed themselves out of a potentially game-winning touchdown.

With five minutes on the clock, on fourth down and 4 just inside Green Bay’s half, quarterback Geno Smith threw a huge pass into the red zone for what looked like a 37-yard touchdown catch to Jeremy Kerley.

At 31-24, a two-point conversion as well as the six points for a touchdown, the Jets could have had an unlikely lead in Lambeau Field. Instead the play was voided, thanks to an ill-timed time-out (pardon the pun) from New York’s offensive co-ordinator, Mart Mornhiweg. It had been called by officials moments before the snap, but the players did not hear it, and continued the play.

JOHNNY FOOTBALL MAKES HIS DEBUT

It wasn’t spectacular, but Johnny Manziel finally made his NFL regular season debut for Cleveland. In the Browns’ shock win against New Orleans Manziel gave one hand-off for his running back for a three yard gain, one for a three yard loss, as well as one incomplete pass. As we said, hardly setting the league alight just yet.

NFL FANTASY WATCH

Buffalo Defence — The Bills haven’t been winning games by accident, their D has been on song week 1 and 2. If you’ve already got them, then you go Glen Coco, but if you need to boost your D points, it’s worth getting your trading game going.

DeMarco Murray — The talented Cowboy has thrown his hat in the ring for the title of the league’s best running back in 2014 and faces a St Louis defence that he has torched for over 400 yards in his only two career games against the Rams.

Aaron Rodgers — Concerns over a disappointing first week return were put to bed with a storming comeback victory against the New York Jets which saw Rodgers air it out to his numerous receiving options. Big week ahead against a sieve-like Detroit secondary.

Antonio Gates — His NFL eulogy was already being written heading into this season, but the pioneering athletic tight end has proven evergreen muting Seattle’s Legion of Boom with a trio of touchdowns in San Diego’s upset win. If Gates broke the Seahawks defence then we’re betting he can do just the same against Buffalo.

Donald Brown — Surprise, surprise, Ryan Mathews is hurt and Brown is the man more than capable of towing the load in his wake. Mathews is set for over a month on the sidelines, giving Brown ample opportunity to boost your line-up in the coming weeks with stud running backs dropping like flies.

VINCE LOMBARDI QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Each week we’ll plumb the archives for words of wisdom from five-time championship winning coach, and the namesake for the NFL trophy, Vince Lombardi.

The NFL could use this gem as the public outcry towards taking a stand against domestic violence, grows louder and louder.

“People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defences, or the problems of modern society.”
