THE scene was stomach-churning: a motionless Giancarlo Stanton strapped to a flatboard, being carted off the field, his face bloodied after an 141kph fastball struck him in his left cheek, gashing his face, fracturing cheekbones and requiring stitches.

The Miami Marlins said Friday morning they expect Stanton will be released from a Milwaukee hospital soon and head to South Florida where he will be evaluated further.
The team said it does not believe Stanton will require surgery even though it was reported that Stanton had a “tooth lodged in [his] cheek” and a “hole in [his] lip so big the [doctor’s] index finger fit in it.”
