The Toowoomba Mountaineers men’s QSL side suffered their second defeat of the season on Saturday as they suffered a disappointing 79-69 loss to the South West Metro Pirates.

In a game where the Mountaineers were left to rue what could have been after a back and forth contest, we reveal the biggest talking points from the clash.

12-0 fourth quarter run seals fate

For the first three quarters of action, there was little to separate the two sides as both teams seemingly had an answer for everything that was thrown at them.

With eight minutes left in the contest, the game was anyone’s for the taking with scores tied at 55 points apiece.

However, in the space of less than two and a half minutes, the game was flipped on its head as the Pirates stormed out to a 12-point lead.

From there, the damage was done as South West Metro cruised to victory in the final five minutes of the clash.

MVP locked down

After a stellar first three games of the season, reigning QSL MVP and Mountaineers captain Adam Gehrig was shut down for the first time this year.

In the first three rounds, Gehrig averaged more than 20 points per game and had been a pivotal feature of the Toowoomba offence.

However, on Saturday, the Pirates had him locked down and held him to just six points for the clash as he only managed two field goals for the contest.

Impressive Ham cameo

Seth Ham may have only played 13 minutes, but he made sure his influence was felt as he scored an impressive 14 points at 71.43 per cent from the field.

He was also efficient from deep as he knocked down two of three attempts from downtown.

Struggles from deep

Despite having several players in the side who are weapons from three-point land, it was a game to forget for the Mountaineers shooters.

As a team, Toowoomba managed just four three-pointers from 27 attempts with none of the starters making a three.

Only Ham (2), Ben Toohey (1) and Noah Silcox-Smith (1) managed to connect from downtown, with the trio shooting a combined four from 12 at 33.33 per cent accuracy.

The Mountaineers will look to put that game past them as soon as possible as they prepare for a double-header this weekend.

Toowoomba will have another away game when they take on the Southern Districts Spartans on Saturday, before returning home to host the Pirates on Sunday afternoon at Clive Berghofer Arena.
