We name the top performers from the round 16 QAFL and round 14 QAFLW action as finals near

We’re at the pointy end of the QAFL and QAFLW seasons and performances are carrying more weight than ever. Discover who has been dominating the run home to finals.

Southport solidified its place at the top of the QAFLW ladder with a 109-point shellacking of Yeronga-South Brisbane in the QAFLW.

The win was a pivotal boost for the Sharks as they head into the week off before chasing their maiden QAFLW flag.

In the QAFL, Aspley claimed a pivotal win over Morningside in their top of the table clash while Sherwood continued its late season charge to an unlikely finals berth with a big win over Palm Beach Currumbin.

QAFL

Tom Hickey (Palm Beach Currumbin Lions)

Nothing new to see here as the former AFL ruck put in yet another great shift for the Lions. He loves the contest and of his 30 touches 26 were contested. What a machine! Had 46 hit outs, 16 clearances, and also hit the scoreboard with a goal.

Jonathan Giles, Will Fletcher, Liam Hude and Isaac McCarthy (Sherwood Magpies)

Sherwood’s late season surge continued after they claimed another respectable scalp in Palm Beach Currumbin. The Magpies had an abundance of standouts in the big win, from Jonathan Giles who racked up 30 touches and nine clearances to Will Fletcher who continued his great season with 23 disposals and some serious scoreboard impact to match in the form of three goals. Isaac McCarthy and Liam Hude were also influential up forward with four goals each as the Magpies piled on 21 majors.

Tommy Horne (Morningside Panthers)

Horne had a solid day out for Morningside despite its loss as he picked up 25 touches, eight clearances, seven inside 50s and goal. Also laid six tackles.

Matthew Payne and Connor Stackelberg (Aspley Hornets)

Connor Stacklenerg continued his great form as one of the league’s premier goalkickers to boot five majors for Aspley from 15 touches. He’s closed the gap on Matt Hammelmann in the hunt to be the competition’s best goalkicker and trails by just four majors. Matthew Payne was also immense in the 28-point win with 29 touches.

Hudson Vivian, Lochie Laing and Ty Gallop (Maroochydore Roos)

Maroochydore piled on the pain against Mt Gravatt in an emphatic 207-point win. There were plenty of impressive performers across the dominant display. Ty Gallop led the way in goalkicking with seven majors from 18 touches, while Aaron Wilson (six) and Elliot Cavallaro (five) contributed heavily to the Roos’ 34-goal total. Hudson Vivian and Lochie Laing were also superb with 26 disposals and two goals and 25 and two respectively.

QAFLW

Zimra Hussain (Wilston Grange Gorillas)

The Gorillas were clinical against the Maroochydore Roos as they conceded just one goal, and Hussain played a superb game to amass an incredible 37 disposals. 19 of her possessions were contested and she also won six clearances.

Louise Tyson and Emma McNaughton (Aspley Hornets)

Tyson continued her stellar season in Aspley’s dominant 52-point win over Coorparoo as they piled on 75 points. Tyson racked up 30 touches – 19 of which were contested – and five clearances. McNaughton kicked almost half of her side’s goals and finished clinically with five majors from just seven touches.

Stephanie O’Brien and Maddy Baldwin (Southport Sharks)

Southport rubber stamped its premiership credentials with a walloping of the struggling Yeronga-South Brisbane to hold them scoreless in a 109-point win. Maddy Baldwin nabbed a quarter of her side’s goals with four majors while Stephanie O’Brien was the leading ball-winner with 29 disposals as well as 17 contested possessions, seven clearances and seven inside 50s.

Laura Roy and Jane Childes (UQ Red Lions)

Roy played a phenomenal game at the coalface as she won 17 contested possessions from 18 disposals. Also had seven clearances, five tackles, and booted a goal. Childes also impressed with 18 touches, seven clearances and five tackles herself.

Ella Caleja (Bond University Bullsharks)

What a day out for Caleja. Bond kicked six goals in its 26-point win over the UQ Red Lions and four came off the boot of Caleja. She also had a game-high 24 disposals if you don’t mind and 12 contested possessions.
