Violent Soho partner with junior rugby league team for jersey

On a day when Brisbane’s NRL team hit rock bottom, there’s a glimmer of hope in grassroots rugby league, courtesy of the city’s most popular currently active band.

With the basket case that is the Broncos, it’s a hard time to be a Brisbane rugby league fan.

But on the day the club’s head coach finally walked away from their season from hell, a humble suburban junior rugby league club gave us all hope for the future.

It came compliments of local band Violent Soho who, despite being rock megastars, are also just average suburban Brisbane footy fans.

The band hail from Mansfield, where Easts Mt Gravatt Junior Rugby League Club has had its home ground at Allan Innes Field since 1978 (and for the 20 years prior at Mt Gravatt Showgrounds).

In the community spirit for which they’ve become known, Violent Soho have partnered with the club to produce a limited-edition jersey, with all proceeds going back to the club.

The jersey features the famous Violent Soho blazing skull logo, embellished with rugby league headgear and a mouthguard, while the reverse is emblazoned with 4122, the southern Brisbane postcode Violent Soho fans have come to recognise so well.

Guitarist James Tidswell and drummer Mikey Richards visited Allan Innes Field in February on the eve of their shoot for the music video Pick It Up Again.

Filmed around Mansfield, Wishart and Mt Gravatt, the video clip includes a shot of Easts Mt Gravatt’s families, as well as Tidswell wearing a pair of the club’s playing shorts.

Easts Mt Gravatt vice-president Daniel Giuffrida said the club was thrilled with the exclusive jersey, and the fact all four band members had registering as club volunteers.

Violent Soho’s latest album Everything is A-OK reached No.1 on the ARIA charts upon its release in April.

The limited-edition jersey will be available soon here.
