Records tumble in supreme night of QGSSSA swimming champion action

St Peters Lutheran College stretched its winning streak to 11 as records tumbled on a gala night at the QGSSSA swimming championships. Discover every star of the pool here.

St Peters Lutheran College has claimed its 11th successive Mollie Gould Cup during a gala night of competition at the QGSSSA swimming championships on Wednesday night.

St Peters stretched out its winning streak which started in 2014, with Australian Dolphins’ latest swimmer, Jaclyn Barclay, helping her school team’s push for victory with a record swim in the open 100m backstroke.

12 years: St Peters (95) from St Margaret’s (91) and BGGS (87)

15 years: St Peters (112) from MBC (86.50) and BSHS (77.50)

16 years: St Peters (102.50) from Somerville House (82) and MBC (81.50)

17 years: St Peters (108) from BSHS (91) and MBC (76)

Multi class: St Hilda’s from St Aidan’s and St Peters

Records also tumbled, among them:

+ St Peters international swimmer Barclay broke an open backstroke record;

+ the St Margaret’s 4x50m medley relay team of Charlotte Roy, Allegra Henderson, Ada Sun and Minti Barnier;

+ Ada Sun of St Margaret’s also claimed an individual record in the 12 years 50m freestyle;

+ Amayah Hill (Div C) and Sienna Teevan ( (Div B) swept in a new generation for St Peters with 12 years 50m records in freestyle;

+ Tia Kiley (St Margaret’s) was magnificent in her 50m free Div D swim;

+ Somerville House’s Olivia Hine in the 16 years 50m butterfly

The championship started in fine style for BSHS whose team of Gemma Zaicek, Elaine Chu, Stevie Fisher and Hannah Allen combined to win in the 4x50m medley relay (17 years). St Peters Chloe Cholet, Hana Lingo, Grace Roberts and Sienna Owen were second and St Hilda’s team of Aylssa Tapper, Manon Baldovini, Amelia Simm and Taylah Guthrie was third.

BSHS had a second victory in the 16 years 4x50m relay courtesy of Darcy Gurrieri-Hyland, Isabella Kolera, Ava McLean and Hanna Headey, with St Peters second and Clayfield College third.

The Clayfield team was Mali Schwarz, Keira Coscarella, Meghan Guthrie-Quinn and Eleanor Myers.

St Peters were on the board in the 15 years 4x50m medley courtesy of Jessica Pearce, Judy Yang, Anahira McCutcheon and Olivia Holmes, with BSHS second and the St Margaret’s team of Polly Young, Annabel Taylor, Sally Sproat and Talie’e Hampton third.

The relays rolled on, with the 14 years 4x50m medley claimed by St Margaret’s team of Charlotte Rhode, Charlotte Morgans, Gloria Finselbach and Lily Keenan.

MBC’s side of Anna Zhou, Rebeeca Whiting, Emily Robson and Elkie Athanasiov was second, with BGGS third (Allegra Chisholm, Olivia Schablon, Olivia Ting and Beatrice Tallis).

An exciting 13 years medley relay was then clinched by a fast finishing BSHS, and when the 12 years medley relay rolled around just minutes later, St Margaret’s (Minti Barnier, Ada Sun, Allegra Henderson and Charlotte Roy) surged to victory.

There was a nice moment for the Clayfield College program when Emily Blake, Riley Taylor, Tea Sherman and Fabienne Gri finished second, with BGGS (Theodora Fryer, Olivia Smith, Chloe Rees and Rosamund Skene) next to touch.

The Open MC 100m freestyle was claimed by Emma Clayton (St Hilda’s), from Holly Warn (St Hilda’s) and Phoebe Finlay (St Aidan’s).

In a white hot open 200m field, St Peters Dominique Melbourn won from BSHS ace Hannah Allen, with Elloise Doolan (Somerville House), third. It was a super race from Melbourn and Allen.

St Margaret’s young star Stella Stuart, who always seems to be on the podium, touched first in the 100m open breaststroke, while in the open backstroke Aussie Dolphins ace Jaclyn Barclay prevailed.

Barclay, a multiple medal winner at the recent World Championships in Doha, was congratulated by her national, club and school coach – Dean Boxall.

Olivia Hine of Somerville House flew to claim the open butterfly, while in the open medley the always impressive Eloise McLellan rose above the pack to win her event.

Margie’s Ada Sun was on fire from start to finish, including winning the 50m 12 years freestyle.

Fabulous racing continued in the 14 years Div A final, with Margie’s Mena Bertinato edging out Annika Kobus (MBC). But Somerville House’s Emma McMahon kept them both honest in third place.

The 15 years Div A was claimed by a fast finishing Ruby Gowns (St Margaret’s) from St Peters Jaslyn Plummer and St Hilda’s gutsy Tribeca Liu who was third.

And in the 16 years 50m dash a thriller unfolded, with Kaci Curtis (St Peters) prevailing from Cosette Cooke (St Margaret’s) and record breaking Olvia Hine (Somerville).

In the 17 years and over 50m sprint, St Peters Lutheran College displayed its depth when Alana Ramsay (Div C), Dominique Melbourn (Div B) and Barclay (Div A) won.

The spoils were shared in the 50m breaststroke, with St Margaret’s Gloria Finselbach (14 years), St Peters Anahira McCutcheon (15 years), Meghan Guthrie-Quinn (Clayfield, 16 years) and St Margaret’s Stella Stuart (17 years) all winning their respective events.

The 50m butterfly events were also juggled around between the schools, with St Peters Amayah Hill striking early (12 years), MBC’s Rose Purcell (13 years) picking up maximum points, and then BSHS’s Annika Silvester (14 years) climbing over the top of rivals.

Moreton Bay College were on the board again in the 15 years thanks to the efforts of Siena Gibson, but Somerville House’s Oliva Hine (16 years) crashed the party to win her race.

It was fabulous competition from the butterfly girls, with the event closed down in grand fashion in the 17 years dash when the golden girl Barclay prevailed.

After a flying start in the 50m backstroke by St Peters pair Sienna Teevan (12 years) and Georgia Pettigrew (13 years), the wins were shared around.

BSHS’s Ana Somerville (14 years), Somerville House’s McLellan (15 years) and Olivia Slater (16 years) all won, with Slater blitzing the field in one of the swims of the night. Hanna Costello won the 17 years and over from Clayfield College.

The wins kept coming from St Margaret’s sensation, Sun, who won the 12 years 100m freestyle with ease, while the Melbourn name remained up in lights, this time courtesy of Jocelyn (13 years, St Peters).

The 14 years 100m freestyle was won by Clementine Cooke (St Margaret’s), the 15 years by Jaslyn Plummer and the 16 years 100m free by St Margaret’s Cosette Cooke.

It was also a mouth watering 17 years and open 100m freestyle final.

Appropriately the final event of the night, the Open Brockway relay, was claimed by the St Peters team of Alana Ramsay, Kaci Curtis, Dominique Melbourn and Jaclyn Barclay.
