The World Cup may be over but the momentum football is gathering in Queensland is showing no signs of slowing down after helping to host the globe’s biggest tournament.
Representative teams have been named and are stacked with the next batch of male and female stars, premiers are being crowned in senior football leagues and the incredible work of volunteers from across the state are helping to make it all happen.

FQPL Far North & Gulf Matches of the Round
Men
Southside Comets vs. Edge Hill United
7pm Saturday, 26 August | Walker Road
The fifth placed Southside Comets host Premiers Edge Hill United in the penultimate FQPL Far North & Gulf Men fixture at Walker Road.
Edge Hill have already sealed the premiership after an outstanding season which has seen them lose just one game, while the Comets have the chance to move into the last finals position if they hand the Tigers their second loss.
Southside sit in fifth place, three points behind Innisfail United with both sides in action on the final weekend of the regular season. The Comets goal difference is 12 compared to Innisfail’s 6, so a win for the Comets paired with a loss for Innisfail would all but seal finals football.
Get down to Walker Road this Saturday evening as the Comets fight for their place in finals!
Women
Stratford Dolphins vs. Southside Comets Halleys

It’s winner takes all in the final match of the FQPL Far North & Gulf Women as the Stratford Dolphins host Southside Comets Halleys this Friday evening.
Stratford currently sit in fourth place, one point behind Comets Halleys in third place, with Edge Hill United just one point ahead of Comets Halleys in second.
The importance of victory for either team can’t be underestimated, with a Semi Final matchup against Leichhardt FC White awaiting the side that finishes in fourth, while either side can potentially move into second depending on Edge Hill United’s mid-week result against Leichhardt FC Red.
The Dolphins come into this clash in red-hot form, currently on a seven-game winning streak, with their last loss coming against Leichhardt FC White in Round 12, which ended 3-2. Comets Halleys haven’t played in two weeks, with their last match a 12-0 victory over Comets Levy on 9 August. Make sure to head down to Nick Brko Field this Friday to catch all the action.
Junior football superstars impress at FQ Academy Carnival
Football Queensland held the final FQ Academy carnival for U9 – U12 boys and girls at Endeavour Park over the weekend featuring players from across the Northern Conference.
The next wave of Queensland football stars from FQ Academy programs in Cairns, Townsville and Mt Isa took to the field to showcase their talent and development in front of local and state squad coaches.

Gold Coast Knights crowned NPL Queensland premiers
The Gold Coast Knights have sealed its first premiershipwith a game to spare.
The club’s 4-2 win over Olympic Football club last Sunday put the club eight points clear of nearest rivals Moreton Bay following’s the latter’s 1-0 to Peninsula Power.
It means Gold Coast cannot be beaten going into the final regular season game against Rochedale Rovers on Saturday.
The premiership look sealed within the first 30 minutes of Gold Coast’s game, with Bradden Inman (9th minute), Max Brown (25th minute) and Tyson Martin (27th minute) putting the side up 3-0.
Knights took the three goal margin into halftime before Austin Ludwik (73rd minute) responded to a Pasquale De Vita goal for Olympic in the 56th minute.
Olympic’s Lathan Dunn scored in the 90th minute but the game was already over.
Match of the Week Men – FQPL 3 South Coast Men – Kingscliff vs Southport
The premiership race in the FQPL 3 South Coast Men’s competition heads to the final day, with Southport Warriors just a point away from securing the first piece of silverware on offer this season.
Southport currently hold the ascendency in the race for the premiership over second placed Robina City, with the Warriors holding a three-point buffer over City, who will face sixth placed Musgrave at the same time on Saturday.
It will be no walk in the park for Southport, with the Warriors knowing they will need to be at the top of their game against the third placed Kingscliff Wolves.
The Wolves have been in strong recent form, coming off the back of a resounding 6-0 win against Coomera last weekend, and will relish the chance to spoil Southport’s party. Southport prevailed 1-0 in the previous meeting between the sides earlier in the season and will be confident of repeating the feat.
For Southport, the equation is simple.
A draw or win will see them crowned premiers for the 2023 season, whilst a loss would hand Robina City the chance to snatch the trophy from under their noses.
If Robina were to win and Southport were to lose, Robina would move level on points and jump Southport into first thanks to a vastly superior goal difference.
The stage is set for a blockbuster final day of the season. Make sure to head out to Walter Peate Reserve from 5pm on Saturday evening to watch this one unfold!

Match of the Week Women – FQPL 1 Women – Broadbeach United vs Western Pride
The race for finals in the FQPL 1 Women’s competition heads down to the final match of the season this weekend as Broadbeach United host relegation threatened Western Pride.
Fresh off the back of a professional 2-0 victory over Moreton Bay last week, Broadbeach sit in the driving seat to secure the fourth and final place in the final’s series.
Broadbeach currently hold a three point and even goal buffer over fifth-placed Logan Lightning, who play off against sixth placed Robina City at the same time this Sunday evening.
For Broadbeach, the situation is clear. A draw or win would secure their place in finals football, whilst a loss would open the door slightly ajar for Logan Lightning to potentially oust United into fourth.
Broadbeach will be confident of a result, but will be wary of the threat posed by Pride, with both sides winning one each against each other in their previous two encounters this season
The finals race is set to be a cracker, and there is still to play for. Head out to Nikiforides Family Park from 5pm this Sunday.

Girls United Come & Try Sessions
Robina City FC will be hosting Girls United Come and Try sessions next Wednesday, 30th August. Girls United is a fun and social football program for women and girls of all experience levels. Juniors (4-11 yrs) will run from 4pm to 5pm, followed by Youth (12-15 yrs) and Women (Open) from 5pm to 6pm.

Michael has coached the Under 8 boys’ team since they were Under 6. He trains them twice a week, arranges tournaments, and guides them in an indoor league post-season (Futsal). He elevated the team to the development division this season. He also helps coach the girls’ division 1 team. Michael’s a dedicated coach who sacrifices evenings to mentor kids. Gold Coast Stars Included in Queensland Squads for 2023 National Youth Championships
Football Queensland has confirmed the state team squads for the 2023 National Youth Championships for Girls and Boys. A Female Under 14 and Under 16 squad will travel to participate in the national tournament from Monday, 9th of October to Friday, 13th of October 2023 in Wollongong. Under 15 and Under 16 Boys competitions will be held from Monday, 2nd of October to Friday, 6th of October 2023. There will be a host of players representing the South Coast at the competition. FQPL Whitsunday Coast Matches of the Round
FQPL Whitsunday Coast Men – Whitsunday United FC vs. Mackay Lions FC (6:00pm, Saturday 26 August | Whitsunday United Sports Park)
With the top four locked in over the weekend the final honours left to be secured is the league title.
Whitsunday United drew over the weekend against Mackay Rangers leaving them with the tough task of winning their final two matches to stay in contention for the Premiership. They are currently three points behind the league leaders Mackay Wanderers and must win or hope the Wanderers drop points in their final match of the season.
They’ll face fourth placed side Mackay Lions who will be battling to finish the season on a high after a strong performance last weekend and bring that momentum into finals.

FQPL Whitsunday Coast Women – Country United FC Orange vs. Mackay Lions FC (6:30pm, Tuesday 22 August | Lions Field)
In a monumental Tuesday night clash Mackay Lions can seal the Premiership if they win or draw against Country United FC Orange.
While Country United have secured their finals berth after defeating Magpies FC last weekend, they’ll want to finish the season strong and potentially upset the undefeated league leaders.
Mackay Lions will be aware that if they lose Whitsunday United can snatch the title with a win and if they surpass them on goal difference of which only one goal currently separates the two sides.

Congratulations to the Football Queensland volunteer of the month in Whitsunday Coast, Lahni Henderson from Whitsunday United. FQ Academy Carnival
The best and brightest under-9 to under-16 boys and girls competed in matches at the FQ Academy Carnival in Rockhampton recently. Teams from Central Coast, Wide Bay and Whitsunday Coast played a series of matches showing off their skills learned during the season in front of Football Queensland coaches monitoring their development.

FQPL 3 Sunshine Coast Men Matches of the Round
Woombye FC vs. Noosa Lions

The final round of the FQPL 3 Sunshine Coast Men is upon us and there’s still plenty to play for in this clash between second place Woombye and third place Noosa Lions.
Two points separate the two sides heading into their final match of the regular season, with a home final on offer for the victorious side.
Woombye FC have been inconsistent over the past three weeks with a victory over Beerwah Glasshouse sandwiched by losses to Kawana FC and Gympie United. The Snakes will want to finish the season off with a strong performance at home and lock in a home Semi Final at the Snake Pit.
The Noosa Lions have been in similar form to Woombye recently, with a win against Nambour Yandina in their most recent fixtures preceded by a loss to Premiers Caloundra FC and draw against Coolum FC.
In their previous encounter this season, the Snakes got the better of the Lions in a thrilling clash at Noosa Lions FC which ended 4-3 in the Snakes’ favour.
Do yourself a favour and head down to Woombye Snakes FC this Saturday from 6pm to catch what promises to be an epic final matchday showdown.

NPL Queensland Men’s Player Spotlight
Gold Coast Knights were crowned Premiers of the NPL Queensland competition in the penultimate round of NPL Men action! Knights’ star defender Austin Ludwik continued his dominant season, scoring a goal and completing 63 of his 65 passes, with a league high 97% pass accuracy. Ante Poljak came off the bench to provide a goal assist and four shot assists in an impactful 39-minute cameo. Brad Inman continued his fine recent goalscoring run and also had a match high of eight touches in the opposition penalty area.
Ginjiro Chiba stepped up in the 92nd minute to rescue a mammoth three points for Brisbane City’s finals football hopes against Sunshine Coast Wanderers. Chiba’s winner capped a fine all-round display for the forward which saw him complete 21 passes and create one key pass. Masashi Yokoyama was also in excellent form at the back, winning 11 duels and making 20 recoveries, whilst Noah Maieroni chipped in with an assist in a solid all-round display.
Marek Madle led the line well for Rochedale Rovers as they upset the applecart with a 2-0 victory over Gold Coast United. Liam McArthur and Uryu Nagata were solid at the back with both winning 15 duels, whilst goalkeeper Jordan Holmes made four important saves and two exits in another professional display.
Dylan Brent’s fine form for Redlands continued as he scored in Redlands 3-0 victory over Brisbane Roar Youth, whilst Peninsula Power claimed the scalp of high-flying Moreton Bay United thanks to an outstanding performance from midfielder Brenton Fox. Fox created five big chances, much to the delight of midfield partner Josah Hitchcock who scored a goal and won 17 duels.
NPL Queensland Women’s Player Spotlight
Bronte Rose was the star of the NPL Women competition yet again, bagging her fourth hat-trick of the season in Gold Coast United’s important 3-0 victory over Mitchelton FC. The forward’s transformation from defender to striker in recent times continues to look a masterstroke as United head towards finals football.
Sunshine Coast Wanderer’s Louise Rolfe had a fine game as her side won 3-1 against Capalaba. Rolfe scored and assisted whilst completing eight take-ons in a dominant display. Charlie Shanahan scored twice and completed 31 passes in an accomplished display up front for the Wanderers.
At the top of the table Eastern Suburbs and Peninsula Power played out a 1-1 draw. Emma Starr was the standout for Easts, completing 50 passes and making 15 ball recoveries in a strong all-round performance. For Power, star midfielder Lani McDougall shone again, winning 16 duels and making 16 recoveries. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Harrington also shone, making five saves to keep Power in the match.
Lions FC eased past the FQ Academy QAS thanks to top performances across the board. Tiarna Karambasis completed 53 passes and made 17 ball recoveries, whilst Meaghan McElligott was the chief provider creating two key passes and two shot assists.
Elsewhere Souths and Olympic played out a nil all draw. Lila Utatao was the standout at the back for Souths winning 10 defensive duels, whilst Christina Woloszczuk was the highlight at the back for Olympic, winning 18 duels and making 12 recoveries.

Match of the Week Men – FQPL Darling Downs – St Albans v Rockville Rovers
The upcoming weekend clash presents a pivotal moment for Grand Final hopes, as St Albans prepares to go head-to-head with Rockville Rovers this Sunday.
Rockville Rovers currently hold a 2-1 advantage in their head-to-head encounters, with their most recent game was just a fortnight ago, resulting in St Albans securing a 2-0 win. Leading up to the season’s conclusion, St Albans found their form, racking up three wins and two draws, amassing a total of 16 goals.
Rockville Rovers navigated a more turbulent path, finishing the season with one win, two draws, and two losses. Regardless of past performance, the match promises a showdown for the Grand Final opportunity, making it a must watch this weekend.

A hotly contested FQPL Darling Downs Women’s Grand Final spot is up for grabs this weekend, when 2nd place finishers take on the 3rd place holders, Rockville Rovers this Sunday.
Highfields Gold seek to extend their impressive season, finishing the season with 12 wins and two losses. A resounding 4-1 win over Rockville Rovers Blue capped off their season. With an impregnable defence, they conceded a mere 8 goals throughout the season.
Rockville Rovers Blue secured the third spot with 11 wins, two draws and three losses for the season. Their scoring capabilities shone in their last three games, finding the net 19 times, and ending the season on a high note.
