In a highly anticipated showdown, the Cairns Marlins and Dolphins are set to take the court for their first NBL1 home games of the season against North Gold Coast Seahawks at Cairns Basketball Stadium. Following contrasting outcomes in their season openers, the Dolphins suffered a setback against the Darwin Salties (68-105), while the Marlins secured a notable victory over the same opponent (90-77).
Dolphins gem Teyahna Bond had 26 points and five assists, while Amy Lewis had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Dolphins head coach Will Lopez said he was optimistic despite missing players, emphasising the resilience of the team and the emergence of young talent.
“Really excited, been looking forward to this for a while,” Lopez said.
“A couple of the young girls have just finished at Under-18 Nationals, so they’ll be back into the fold, we’re still a few pieces short, but this is what NBL1 is about. When we’re down on troops, I’ll play the kids and I’ll give them a chance.
“That’s the exciting part for the fans is they’re going to be coming along to watch local girls who they’ve seen grow up here, get their chance.
Meanwhile, Marlins guard Kian Dennis emphasised the Marlins’ cohesion and defensive focus as crucial elements for success, as he aims to impress Taipans coach Adam Forde and secure a spot in the NBL next season.
“Getting a win under our belt against one of the best teams in the league was really a good start,” Dennis said. “I’m most impressed with how well we worked as a team. Usually in the first game, everyone plays individually, but we got the ball moving around.”
“I’m really impressed with Kody, scoring 33 points to go with 14 rebounds, which is really awesome. Kody and Ky Stattmann are both among the best players in the league.”
Ky Stattmann had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener, while Taipans listed Alex Mudronja guard had 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
“Playing with (Mudronja) again is awesome. He’s like a brother to me,” Dennis said. “Because we spent so much time together at Spartans, Taipans, and now here. We’ve got a connection.”
“Obviously, I want to be in the NBL. That’s my number one goal, and the way to impress Forde is to play strong defence.”
“Hopefully, we get a big crowd this Saturday.”
With both teams eager to showcase their prowess, fans can anticipate an electrifying display of basketball skill and determination. As the Marlins and Dolphins aim to capitalise on home-court advantage, anticipation mounts for an enthralling contest that promises thrilling moments and intense competition.
