The battle for a state title is set to heat up as the defending champions and undefeated home team headline day two of the Basketball Queensland Under-16 Girls State Championships.

After a fairytale run to the gold medal last year, the Mackay Meteorettes are once again in the hunt after an impressive first day of competition, recording wins over the Southern Districts Spartans as well as the Northside Wizards.

And they will have the chance to make it two days in a row without a loss when they take on the Sunshine Coast Rip at 3.30pm as part of The Courier-Mail’s coverage of the tournament at Auchenflower Stadium.

While the central Queensland visitors are vying for a second straight championship, the hometown team, the Brisbane Capitals can take another step towards sealing a semi-finals appearance when they match-up with the Gold Coast Breakers at 9.30am.

All games on court one at Auchenflower will be livestreamed.

REPLAY: BRISBANE CAPITALS BRONZE DEF MORETON BAY FIRE 66-60

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships – Girls – Moreton Bay Flames vs. Brisbane Capitals Bronza

The Brisbane Capitals have kept their undefeated start to the Division 3 tournament alive after fighting off a tough Moreton Bay Fire side to earn a six-point victory.

Brisbane, who are playing on their home court at Auchenflower Stadium, had to answer several charges from the Fire throughout the game but managed to make the crucial plays when it mattered to win their third consecutive game and put themselves in a position to claim top spot in their pool.

Laura Meng was the leading scorer for the Capitals with 20 points and she was supported by Bailee Sands with 17.

Gabrielle Seaby was impressive for Moreton Bay with 20 points of her own.

REPLAY: BRISBANE CAPITALS GOLD DEF GC BREAKERS 70-64

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships – Girls – Brisbane Capitals Gold v Gold Coast Breakers

The Gold Coast Breakers have fallen just short of the upset of the tournament so far after putting an almighty scare into the Brisbane Capitals, who had a potential semi-finals appearance on the line.

Brisbane were favoured to easily take care of the Breakers and finish second in their pool to make the grand final qualifier, but the Capitals struggled to put away Gold Coast’s second team on their own floor.

But the Breakers just couldn’t get over the hump in the end as the Capitals survived to remain undefeated after three games with a match up against the powerhouse Logan Thunder ahead this afternoon.

Lili Schmitt led the way for Brisbane with 15 points while Hilary Fuller had 13 and Tessa Mackinnon had 12.

Alice Minihan was impressive for the Breakers with 17 points.

REPLAY: BRISBANE CAPITALS SILVER DEF NGC SEAHAWKS 67-45

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships – Girls – North Gold Coast Seahawks v Brisbane Capitals Silver

Brisbane have set up a showdown with North Queensland opponents, Townsville, for top spot in their pool after beating the North Gold Coast Seahawks to remain undefeated after three games.

The Capitals were dominant on day one at Auchenflower Stadium, their home court, and that was the case again today as they ran away from the Seahawks early and never looked back.

The result seals a semi-finals spot for Brisbane but the Capitals can earn top spot in their respective pool if they beat Townsville, who are also undefeated, in the final round game tomorrow morning.

The Capitals had four players score in double figures led by Ruby Mazzotta with 13 and Toby Stolberg with 12.

Khalea Potae-Richardson top scored for the Seahawks with 26 points.

REPLAY: SD TITANS DEF SC PHOENIX 70-61

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships – Girls – Southern Districts Titans v Sunshine Coast Phoenix

The Southern Districts Titans have put themselves in pole position to progress to the championship game after fighting off a tough Sunshine Coast Phoenix outfit to seal top spot in Pool A.

Southern Districts only needed the victory against the Phoenix to take top spot after they overcame the Logan Thunder in another close match up in the morning.

The loss leaves a simple situation for the Sunshine Coast with a win needed against Logan tomorrow to progress to the semi-finals.

Annika Scott was again dominant for the Titans with 20 points while Dakota Willmot had 16 and Phoebe Richards also contributed 10 points.

Amelie Robinson led the way for the Phoenix with 20 points.

REPLAY: CAIRNS DOLPHINS DEF GC BREAKERS 101-43

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships – Girls – Div 1 – Gold Coast Breakers v Cairns Dolphins

The Cairns Dolphins have put in their best performance of the tournament so far to record a 58-point drubbing of the Gold Coast Breakers at Auchenflower Stadium.

With a spot in the tournament’s top four all but gone after a loss to Brisbane yesterday, Cairns responded in the best way possible to keep their slim semi-finals chances alive following the result.

The victory means the Dolphins now need to upset the undefeated Logan Thunder tomorrow to have a chance of progressing.

Teyahna Bond was dominant for the Dolphins with 34 points while Ashley Johnson also had 22 points.

Jayla Cassidy was the only Breakers player to reach double figures with 10 points.

REPLAY: MACKAY METEORETTES DEF SC RIP 109-52

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships – Girls – Div 1 – Sunshine Coast Rip v Mackay Meteorettes

The defending champion Mackay Meteorettes’ quest for back-to-back titles has gone smoothly so far, with the team undefeated heading into day four of the competition at Auchenflower Stadium.

Buoyed by a big win over Townsville earlier in the day, Mackay continued their dominant form with a 57-point victory over the University of Sunshine Coast Rip in the afternoon.

The result means the Meteorettes, who last year upset the Gold Coast to win the state championship, will once again face the Waves but this time for top spot in their pool.

Mackay’s Claire Fraser was the game’s leading scorer with 31 points while Monique Bobongie had 28 to continue her red-hot form at the tournament.

Aja King and Paige Gay both had 11 points for the Rip.
