Mackay need just one more win against the Brisbane Capitals this afternoon to seal a top two finish in Pool B along with fellow title contenders, the Logan Thunder.

Makayla Pirrone continued her dominant start to the tournament in Mackay, scoring 30 points to lead the Wildcats to their third consecutive win.

The Mackay Comettes have inflicted the first defeat on the Cairns Corals in Division 2’s Pool B after coming out on top in a low scoring contest in front of their home fans.

Both teams were undefeated going into the game after two wins on day one and this match-up was all about defence as the Comettes and Corals both struggled to find the bottom of the net for the whole 40 minutes.

But Mackay’s Bella Blackburn (15 points) almost outscored Cairns on her own to lead the Comettes to the third consecutive victory and help her team remain undefeated.

The result leaves Cairns with a must-win game this afternoon to qualify for the crossovers.

Eden Catip also had 15 points for Emerald while Libby Kelly had 10.

Mackay are yet to be tested this tournament and that didn’t change against the Capitals as the Meteorettes proved once again why they are arguable the title favourites along with the Thunder following the 39-point demolition of Brisbane.

The pressure defence and transition offence of the Meteorettes has been a beautiful site for basketball fans at the McDonalds Mackay Multisports Stadium this week.

Isabel Smith (19 points) and Cheyenne Bobongie once again led the way for the home side, who will take on Logan at noon tomorrow to decide who finishes top of their pool.

Wynita-Winnie Tahata was impressive for the Capitals, scoring 12 of their 25 points.
