There were two historic School Premier League football representative games played this afternoon with the SPL boys playing Brisbane Roar Academy and the SPL girls under 16s playing QAS Academy.

Both games were livestreamed at couriermail.com.au.

MATCH REPORTS

QPL GIRLS v QAS

The Schools Premier League and QAS under 16 girls drew 2-all in a historic representative match at Logan Metro late today.

QAS scored midway through the second half through Jolianne Cruz to draw level after SPL had challenged them all the way.

In the end 2-all was a fitting result and many SPL girls would have impressed talent scouts at the game, particularly Maddison Teakle (Harristown SHS), Christina Amajouyi (Corinda SHS) and Sheaff Murphy (Chancellor State College).

SPL coach Kelly Crew was left feeling disappointed her side did not win. “And that was not a position I thought we’d be in.’’

“It was a really, really competitive,’’ Crew said.

“The girls did not know what to think at the start, playing the QAS. They had their own perceptions.

“But it was good to see their confidence growing in the warm-up and when they got on the field, it was just football.

“They played their game and their confidence grew over the game.

“There was a little bit of feeling each other out, but once they got the ball in behind them it was “right, let’s go for this’.

SPL scored on the stroke of halftime, with SPL’s Jessica Gientz sliding a left footer into the back of the net despite being off balance after Tegan Van Vegchal’s penalty shot had been saved.

Gientz’s goal gave SPL a deserved 2-1 advantage in  a game which really went up a couple of gears after a slowish start.

SPL out played QAS early only for QAS to strike back and gain parity.

SPL’s Christina Amajouyi opened the scoring for SPL when, from the centre right wing, she drove the ball hard into the far left hand corner of the net.

SPL’s Jasmine Hewitson also had a shot at goal for SPL after a lofted pass by Van Vegchal, but the QAS keeper was up to the task.

The dangerous Hewitson then chopped a left footer toward goals, but QAS’ Shianna Singh covered to hack the ball safely away.

But almost against the run of play QAS hit back through Tamar Levin after Laura Elliot had put QAS on the attack with a well weighted lofted pass from midfield toward right winger Jolianne Cruz.

The score remained 1-all before Gientz broke the deadline as the halftime whistle was about to blow.

SPL keeper Sheaff Murphy, from Chancellor State College, was outstanding in making two saves for her side.

THE BOYS

SPL v BRISBANE ROAR ACADEMY

A surging Schools Premier League boys XI finished with a wet sail to beat Brisbane Roar Academy tonight.

Two second half goals lifted SPL above the high water mark to defy a Roar side that at times had sustained periods of domination without scoring.

Two Gold Coast boys, Eli Hughes (PBC) and Ariss Laghai (Helensvale SHS) scored for SPL, with Laghai’s tremendous contribution coming 10 minutes from full-time to give his team a 2-nil advantage.

Earlier in the half Hughes broke a nil-all the deadline with a well taken left footed penalty shot after he had been fouled in the box following an excellent cross from Brayden Winlaw (Murrumba SC).

Hughes’ goal came against the run of play, with Roar feasting on a succession of corners but being unable to put the ball in the back of the goals.

A header from Kiers went over the goals, while Jhairah Taylor pushed a strike just wide.

But SPL showed talent and tenacity to rebound from adversity to challenge Roar which led to Hughes being in a position to score.

Indeed for a side that had never played together before, it was an outstanding performance and both SPL players and coaching staff should take a bow.

Coach Luke Morley said the performance highlighted the talent in the SPL competition.

“I was very happy with their effort and the way they put things together.

“The coaches of individual schools know their players really well and they selected individuals who had great ability to come together with a short preparation.’’

The first half finished nil-all, with Brisbane Roar shading their rivals for more than a quarter of the game before SPL found their groove and matched Roar.

Roar had the two best chances of the half.

Firstly Finn Faulkner blasted a shot from the right wing, but SPL’s Brayden Winlaw stuck out of his foot to help his keeper to defend the shot.

And then Jhairah Taylor cannoned a right footer into the goalpost, watching the ball rebound away.

But SPL gathered themselves and twice generated half chances in the lead-up to the break.

THE PREVIEW

Players in this afternoon’s two historic School Premier League football representative games, to be livestreamed at couriermail.com.au, will be given the chance to impress Brisbane Roar Academy and QAS Academy coaches and selectors.

The historic clashes between QPL and QAS Academy (girls) and QPL and Roar Academy (boys) would also be streamed via the Gold Coast Bulletin, Toowoomba Chronicle and Sunshine Coast Dailyfrom Logan Metro.

“For some of these players it is all about getting exposure to these types of situations,’’ said SPL boys’ coach Luke Morley.

“You look at the careers of some players and they start off with a game against a big opposition team and Brisbane Roar is as big as it gets in Queensland for us.’’

Morley said some of the players may not, for one reason or another, be involved in the NPL pathways at club level so this match would be a chance for them to shine.

“Through the public school system and our SPL competition these players have been identified as a player who, if they go out there on the day, might be a player who one of the Roar coaches picks up.’’
