Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, Pacific Pines SHS, Varsity State College and Woodcrest State College have qualified for the Australia Football League Queensland (AFLQ) SEQ Invitational Gala Day junior girls finals after wins today.
The teams will play in the finals to be staged on October 16-17.
They won through after the opening day of a week long Australia Football League Queensland (AFLQ) SEQ Invitational Gala Day carnival.
Games were being livestreamed at www.couriermail.com.au, at the Gold Coast Bulletin and News affiliates.
Following today’s games at Sandgate AFC, Tuesday games switch to Yeronga, with Coorparoo AFC hosting Wednesday and Thursday matches.
Varsity State College coach Simon Foat was delighted to remain on track for another finals’ appearance after losing last year’s decider to PBC.
“To have these three games will help us toward the finals,’’ Foat said.
“We made last year’s grand final against Palm Beach Currumbin and ideally we will look to go one better this time.’’
Woodcrest State College coach Chris Cant said it was a great reward for the girls.
“I am super proud of the girls. I think from the first minute of the first match we improved.
“We exceeded expectations and I could not be prouder of the girls.’’
Pacific Pines SHS coach Mitch Montgomery said his girls did a good job.
“We had two wins and lost the last game to PBC, but we knew what they were going to bring,’’ he said.
“The first two wins were really impressive and they worked together well seeing it was a new team. Some of these year 7s have not played before with this group.’’
PBC coach Matt Ashenden watched his side win three games from as many matches.
“We were lucky to play a couple of warm-up games against Varsity and Park Ridge which probably held us in good stead, but there is nothing like these gala days when you have to play three games, one after another,’’ he said.
“It was a slow start but in the last two games we played really good footy.’’
