We’re at the business end of the competition as teams fought for spots in the grand finals on day three of the Basketball Queensland Under-14 Girls State Championships in Mackay.

The third day tipped off with several important final pool games, headlined by two undefeated title contenders, in the Logan Thunder and home team Mackay Meteorettes, facing-off for top spot in their pool.

Both teams had rolled through their games so far with the Logan Thunder looking to build on their SQJBC championship from last month while Mackay were aiming to capitalise on the club’s success at state tournaments in recent years.

MACKAY COMETTES DEF NGC SEAHAWKS 61-54 (Girls Div 2)

Replay: Queensland Basketball – U14 Girls Championship (Div 2 – North Gold Coast Seahawks Teal v Mackay Comettes)

The Mackay Comettes have sealed top spot in their pool in the Division 2 tournament after finishing the round-robin stages undefeated with a hard-fought seven-point win over the North Gold Coast Seahawks.

Bella Blackburn helped lead her team once again with 16 points as the Comettes struggled to pull away from the Seahawks, who battled until the final buzzer.

Tahlia Jensen also had an impressive game for Mackay with 13 points while Payton Sievers had 10.

Seahawk Holly McNamee was the game’s leading scorer with 22 points and she also received support from Tanaka Nyambiya with 13 and Mia Gurney with 12.

The result means the Comettes will face the second placed team in Pool B while the Seahawks will miss out on the semi-finals.

MACKAY STARS DEF REDCITY PRIDE 34-33 (Girls Div 3)

Replay: Queensland Basketball – U14 Girls Championship (Div 3 – Mackay Stars v RedCity Pride)

The Mackay Stars have recorded their first win of the tournament after a one-point nail biter over the RedCity Pride this morning.

Mackay had battled hard across all of their pool games so far in the Division 3 tournament but had come up short, however, the home team was up for this contest and so was RedCity.

Stars player Bianca Maynard and RedCity’s Caitlin North matched each other basket for basket, both scoring 10 points for the game.

But in the end it was the Stars who made the crucial plays to finish with the tightest of victories and give them some confidence heading into the next stage of the tournament.

LOGAN THUNDER GOLD DEF TOWNSVILLE FLAMES 51-38 (Girls Div 1)

Replay: Queensland Basketball - U14 Girls Championship (Div 1 - Townsville Flames v Logan Thunder Gold)

A 16-point performance from Phoebe Stedman has helped the Logan Thunder Gold clinch a place in the fifth to eighth place bracket after an impressive win over the Townsville Flames to finish the pool stages.

Logan’s second team came into the game in form after recording their first win at the tournament yesterday afternoon and they continued to build on that, pushing out to an early lead and being able to hold of Townsville later in the game.

Stedman, who was named as one of the players to watch this tournament, led from the front for the Thunder with another top talent Clara Kolb leading the scoring for Townsville with 13 points.

Both teams will play their crossover at 5.30pm this afternoon.
