REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships - Boys - Div 3 – Sunshine Coast Phoenix Black v Hervey Bay Hurricanes

Could this be the team who challenges the home team Northside Wizards for the state championship?

While the undefeated Wizards were dominant on day one of the Basketball Queensland Under-16 Boys State Championships, being played at both the Northside Indoor Sports Centre and Brendale’s South Pine Sports Complex, so were the Cairns Marlins.

Last year’s runners-up in this age group never missed a beat on day one, easing to victory in both of their games.

REPLAY: GC TIDE DEF MORETON BAY FLAMES 86-56

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships - Boys - Moreton Bay Flames vs. Gold Coast Tides

The Gold Coast Tide made it three wins from three games this morning after an impressive performance against the Moreton Bay Flames on day two in the Boys Division 4 tournament.

After a perfect 2-0 start on the first day, Gold Coast ran the Flames off their feet and their balanced attack, with four players scoring in double figures, proving too much for Moreton Bay.

Xavier Focas led the scoring for Gold Coast with 18 points while Troy Johns also had 16 and Aditya Naik and Jordan Ambler both recorded 12 points.

Jabari Polig was the best performer for Moreton Bay with 17 points.

REPLAY: NORTHSIDE WIZARDS DEF TOOWOOMBA MOUNTAINEERS 93-50

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships - Boys - Toowoomba Mountaineers v Northside Wizards 1

The train keeps on rolling for the Northside Wizards as the team, who are undefeated this season, did it comfortably to earn a 43-point win over Toowoomba at Brendale’s South Pine Sports Complex this morning.

Northside, who are the favourites to take out the gold medal, were able to share the minutes and give their key players plenty of rest ahead of the business end of the tournament after running out to an early double digit lead and never looking back.

The seven foot tower that is Rocco Zikarsky returned to the court after suffering a finger injury yesterday to dominate the game with 31 points for the Wizards.

Captain Lebron Brooks also had 15 points with Kailan Sales scoring 12.

Samuel Geu was impressive for the Mountaineers with 21 points.

REPLAY: GC ROLLERS DEF SD TROJANS WHITE 85-63

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships - Boys - SD Trojans White v Gold Coast Rollers

The Gold Coast Rollers gave sealed a semi-finals appearance after winning their third consecutive game for the tournament this morning.

Riding a wave of momentum from two impressive victories on day one, the Rollers completely dismantled Southern Districts with both a Cayden Brown (24 points) and Hunter Clements Kupsch (20 points) dominating on the offensive end for the Gold Coast.

Logan Petrocevich also contributed with 10 points of his own.

Jack McGrath was the best performer for the Trojans with 15 points.

REPLAY: CAIRNS MARLINS DEF SC RIP 102-43

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships - Boys - Sunshine Coast Rip Black v Cairns Marlins

A 59-point demolition of the University of Sunshine Coast Rip has helped the Cairns Marlins easily grab top spot in Pool A of the Boys Division 1 competition.

Arguably the second favourites to take out the title, behind the Northside Wizards, last year’s runners up haven’t been challenged yet in their four games for the tournament with their pressure defence and running game on full display against the Sunshine Coast.

Tyson Crees again showed why he is one of the best players in the country for his age, dominating the game on both ends, including scoring 34 points to be the game’s highest scorer.

Blake Dorahy also had an impressive game with 15 points while Mahal Martin had 14 and Daniel Statton had 11.

Elijah Otasui was the Rip’s leading scorer with 14.

REPLAY: LOGAN THUNDER DEF MORETON BAY FIRE 84-80

REPLAY: Queensland Basketball U16 State Championships - Boys - Div 2 – Moreton Bay Fire v Logan Thunder

A late fight back from the Moreton Bay Fire fell just short earlier today as the Logan Thunder sealed a spot in the tournament’s top four after a hard-fought four-point win.

Logan and Moreton Bay split their match-ups during the SQJBC season with each team claiming one win each and the rivalry showed in the first half as neither team could develop any type of comfortable lead.

But it was all the Thunder in the third quarter as they connected on several big three-pointers and put the clamps on the Fire on the defensive end to run out to a double digit lead at the final break.

However, Moreton Bay weren’t done yet, with the team’s size proving hard for Logan to deal with and the deficit was reduced to just two points with three minutes left.

Logan then managed to answer the Fire’s run after being able to find their way to the free-throw line and knock down a bunch of clutch shots to win the game.

Harrison McAuliffe was the Thunder’s leading scorer with 20 points while Oskar Olechnowicz had 19 with Malachi Witehira and Ashley McGrath also contributing 10 points each.

Harrison Young was impressive for the Fire with 24 points.

REPLAY: NORTHSIDE WIZARDS 2 DEF GLADSTONE POWER 124-45

A perfect two days of basketball has helped the Northside Wizards book a spot in the Division 2 semi-finals after a 79-point victory over the Gladstone Power took the home side to four wins from four games.

The Wizards were expected to easily take care of their central Queensland opponents, who are yet to win a game, and that’s exactly what happened as Northside took the match over from the tip-off to the end.

Northside now have a showdown with fellow undefeated team, RedCity, ahead on day three which will determine who finishes on top of their pool.

The Wizards had three players score more than 20 points in Lee Van Der Westhuizen (28), Samuel Cotterell (22) and Rylan Carlisle (20).

Keahn Tuakura battled hard all game for Gladstone and came away with 27 points.
