The Queensland Times has compiled a list of the Best and Fairest players from Friday night’s footy action.
Here we include the Ipswich Rugby League under 17 division 1, under 17 development and under 15 competitions.
Let’s see the boys who had a great performance with rugby league returning back to Ipswich after a month off.
Round 10 Best and Fairest
Norths Under 17 division 1
Fullback: Jacobi Shaw
With limited preparation for the game due to work commitments and coming off the reserves bench, Shaw found himself in the action within the first five minutes.
This was due to Tigers regular fullback Ethan Court dislocating his finger in two places making a desperate try saving tackle.
Shaw, who has played the whole season in the #6 was exceptional filling in at the back.
His communication in defence was first class helping his fellow teammates set their line but his contribution in attack was even more impressive.
The Ipswich SHS Langer Trophy trooper used his speed to get the Tigers over the advantage line with impressive work out of dummy half after quick play the balls.
Head Coach Brett McCabe said he assisted or finished off our attacking raids with his game awareness.
“Jacobi has that X factor in attack that lifts the spirits of his teammates and from the sidelines, is a pleasure to watch.”
Wing: Peter Setefano
Without doubt Friday night was Setefano’s best game in the Division 1 side this year.
The right winger has been working hard on several areas of his game over the past month and the benefits showed.
His involvement lifted with numerous carries coming off the line to take the pressure off his forward pack, running strongly every time and making the Redbank defence work hard to bring him down.
Head coach Brett McCabe said he was positive in his approach to fielding and returning the football when the opposition kicked down his side of the field.
“His ball security was exceptional and his defence as always with Peter was determined and reliable.”
He also managed to cross the line for North’s second try finishing off some impressive teamwork in the leadup, a great reward for an outstanding performance.
Springfield Under 17 Development
The Panthers competed as a team for the first time this season, coming together and all having a great game. Their defense and attack was greatly improved.
Fullback Eric Sluyters was solid at the back organising the troops while racking up great run meters from the back of the field under the high ball. He had a couple of line breaks returning the ball.
The halves in Bobby Samuels and Riley Murrell worked well shifting the ball which allowed their outside men to run.
Seth Holland played strong at centre, however it was every player on the team who put in a man of the match effort to beat West End 28-10.
West End Under 17 Development
It was a tough night at the office for the dogs, letting in four consecutive tries in the first half.
But, they showed courage when fighting back towards the back end of the game with Ephraim Tuua Scoring a double with 2 barnstorming hit ups.
Gregor Segi and Eden McGurk-Johns were instrumental in defence.
Norths Under 17 Development
Supporters of both clubs were treated to a very entertaining game with halfback Jackson Midgley and five-eighth Reagan Arch both having outstanding games.
Midgley displayed his much improved organising skills which maintained the team shape.
Arch provided a quality kicking game and was able to hit the try line under extreme pressure. Head coach Dennis Schofield said both players are developing an impressive capacity to read the opposition’s game which was “instrumental in the team’s win.”
“The team played a magnificent game, especially in light of the recent bad run of illness.”
Karalee and Brothers White Under 17 Development
With a top of the table clash against Brothers White, the Karalee boys put in a shift to win 22-10 in what was a hard fought match.
Brothers No.14 Luke Howbrig had switched clubs this year and fought a hard game against his previous team.
He put in a brilliant effort trying his heart out to get the win for his new team. His defence and attack was admirable..
Bailey Perano for Karalee held his own against a much bigger side, defended his edge and ran the ball as hard as he could.
Perano was put under lots of pressure from kick returns and did not fail any task that was asked of him out on the field.
Head coach Michael Huckel said: “To see his team grow and get better week in week out with all the anguish they are going through with some teams being much older and stronger is a blessing on how far some coaches and players have come for season 2022.”
Redbank Under 17 Development
Lock: Trystan Tiley
With the bears doing plenty of defence throughout the game Tiley kept the middle defence tight and motivated the team throughout the game.
Wing Owen Furse was great on defence. Head coach Heath Tiley said coming off his wing he was exceptional, “making three tackles in a row to help out his tiring team mates.”
Swifts Under 17 Development
Front rower: Brisland Manutai
Manutai was the Swifts bartering ram going forward with great defence and some tough carrying hit-ups. He set a platform for his teammates to roll forward.
He’s a young frontrower with exceptional dance moves in the post match celebrations.
Prop: Logan Costello
Costello is an exceptional young footballer, with his versatility on the field allowing him to slot in all over the park.
He’s a mobile, strong and aggressive young man with great vision and an exceptional work rate.
He will be in action for St Edmund’s College First XIII Rugby League team this Saturday.
Centre: Connor Westcott
Westcott was in flying form on Friday, finishing Swift’s 26-4 dominance over Lowood with two tries.
Some scintillating speed and footwork when caressing his way down the right side of the field topped off the win.
Coach Luke O’Doherty said he is a very coachable young man with endless opportunities going forward.
Springfield Under 15
Prop: Xzavier Timoteo
Timoteo steered the Panthers to a 16-4 victory over Redbank, coming off representing the Queensland Under 15 Schoolboys team at Nationals.
He continued his form straight back into club level. Head coach Chris Kitto said his leadership skills have been one of his big assets this year and is “growing into a player of the future.”
Solid performances by second rower Uili Lemalu and Flynn Baker who were defensively very strong all game gave Springfield the edge.
Brothers Under 15 Blue
Fassifern played a strong first half leading 10-0, but it was the Brothers boys who dug deep to come away with a 38-10 victory.
Half Bailey Vang took control in the second half with a great kicking game which led to three tries. With great vision, Vang attacked Fassifern where needed.
Jake Wade played an incredible defensive and attacking game crossing for an outstanding try.
At Lock, Wade’s support play up through the middle led to some great tries.
But it was second rower Eithen O’Dea who was the standout. His defence in the middle was outstanding. He led the way in defence to give his team a boost in the middle of the field in a 38-0 second stanza.
Norths Under 15
Player of the match: Tyree Loata
After the long break, Tigers rookie to watch Tyree Loata has come back and taken every opportunity.
Loata’s defence against a big Goodna side was strong and he dominated the middle of the field with driving tackles.
The young centre’s attack was exciting, breaking Goodna’s line with every touch which led to two 40m breaks, one in which he scored.
Fullback: RJ Nagas
When Nagas got the ball in attack he looked dangerous with every touch. He also organised the defensive line well from the back.
Prop: Powanga Babia
The barnstorming front rower was a handful with every hit up. So much so the opposition were looking out for him in the defensive line with some heavy hits being dished out.
