Palm Beach Currumbin pushed Nerang until final play in a gallant 33-24 defeat to prove there is plenty of life in the Alleygators despite losing three of its last four Gold Coast District Rugby Union matches.
Fighting losses to Nerang (9pts), Surfers Paradise (21pts) and Helensvale (3pts) show the Gators have found their feet again after mid-season instability following the exit of coach Jack Moon.
Assistant coach Simon Rezo, a former Croatian international, has engineered a fightback that has Palm Beach going toe-to-toe with the competition’s best once again.
An accurate minute conversion in the 78th minute would have seen PBC tie Nerang 26-all but a costly miss forced the Alleygators to chance their arm from inside their half in search of the knockout in final play.
Nerang turned over possession and scored to dash that dream, knocking Palm Beach down to sixth on the ladder with four games remaining.
“The results haven’t gone our way in the last few weeks with a tough run of fixtures,” Rezo said.
“We outscored Helensvale four tries to three, threw the kitchen sink at Surfers and weren’t quite good enough and then we had a heartbreaker at Nerang.
“It’s been a nice, tough run for us. We’ve got the cohesion factor starting to click and belief building.
“We reassessed last night and it’s a matter of winning everything for us now. Hopefully as that top five play each other they can leave a few points on the table. We have a lot to play for.”
Teenage flyhalf Luke White is proving why he is considered a star of the present as well as the future, making a case for man of the match in a losing side in his first game back from a fractured eyesocket.
Surfers Paradise will enter the run home as premiership favourites after avenging its four point Round 4 defeat to Hinterland Celtics 75-7 on Saturday.
Playing at home against an understrength Celtics the Dolphins romped to the biggest first grade margin of victory the Gold Coast has seen in four years.
The 68-point margin was the district’s widest since Colleges defeated Eagles 71-0 on June 19, 2021.
Gold Coast Eagles made it back to back wins by completing a season sweep over Bond Pirates, 54-15.
The Eagles beat Bond 66-5 last time they met.
Helensvale’s odds for the minor premiership remain healthy after a 54-7 win over Coomera.
All sides in the top four are within a handful of points differential of each other.
In the Southeast Queensland Women’s Cup, Gold Coast Eagles extended its lead on the ladder with a 36-12 local derby win over third-placed Bond Pirates.
