The Leichhardt Lions have begun their FQPL men’s season with a resounding roar.
Lions have notched up an impressive four wins and a draw from their first five games of the season, with a 0-2 result against Innisfail United away on Sunday their latest victory.
The reigning champions, aiming for an unprecedented three-peat, have demonstrated their dominance on the field under the guidance of their new player-coach, 51-year-old Alex Russell.
Lions president Jessy Mulla said Russell has used his wealth of experience to infuse the team with a winning mentality and tactical edge.
“The experience he brings from playing professionally in England is wearing on the team and it’s showing results,” he said.
“We press up the pitch but we know when to sit back and defend depending on the game’s situation.
“We’ve got very smart players that can slot into different positions depending on what the team needs.
“Everyone knows their role, it’s been a team performance this season.”
Employing a 4-3-3 formation that seamlessly transitions to a 4-2-3-1 when necessary.
Versatile captain Josh Mulla has emerged as a pivotal figure in the Lions’ attacking arsenal.
Despite lacking a conventional striker, Mulla, along with Chris Sullivan, has spearheaded the team’s offensive efforts with great effect.
Mulla’s ability to seamlessly transition between roles and contribute to all phases of play has been instrumental in the team’s success, currently leading the club’s goalscoring charts.
“He plays three positions nearly every game,” Jessy Mulla said.
“He starts as a striker then he goes back to midfield when there’s some defensive subs and he’ll help out in the back line.”
17-year old Clay Bockman has been terrific at right-back while 18-year old Muhammad ‘Vicky’ Baqir has been a threat in attacking midfield.
Wingers Kaleab Agegnehu and Jean Assumani have been cunning in the final third.
New centre-back Mikkel Vilhelmsen has bolstered the defensive spine of the side, allowing Mulla to play a more prominent offensive role.
“Finding quality left-footed centre halves can be difficult nowadays,” Mulla said.
“Bronson Coppin has been another huge asset that’s brought a lot of experience to the team.”
