FAR NORTH AND GULF
Southside Comets FC are going where no Comet has gone before, reaching the quarterfinals of the Kappa Queensland Cup after an emphatic regional final victory over FQPL Whitsunday Coast outfit Magpies FC in Townsville on Saturday.
The FQPL Far North & Gulf outfit have enjoyed a near dream cup run to date, edging out highly fancied regional opponents on route to set up a date with NPL Queensland heavyweights Olympic FC on their home turf.
The Comets travelling supporters created an electric atmosphere as they got off fast start, with William Monin converting a penalty to give Southside a one-goal advantage.
The Magpies hit back to square things up and it looked destined to end one-all at halftime, before a brilliant finish from Zeca Soares moments before the break gave Comets the upper hand.
Southside put their foot on the gas in the second half, with captain Kyle Nichol scoring two second-half goals, including a long-range strike, to seal the regional final win and move one win away from an appearance in the National Round of 32.
Goalkeeper Michael Hood was instrumental in keeping the Comets ahead at multiple stages throughout the game, and with the penalty shootout heroics against Townsville Brothers in the previous round.
MiniRoos Team of the Week
Tully Flames U6/7 Habaneros
Our MiniRoos team of the week is one of Tully Flames’ youngest teams, the U6/7 Habaneros.
It is their first year playing soccer for some of these boys after moving up from our squirts 3–5-year-old program.
Club president and coach Dom Cavallaro is passionate about giving the kids a soccer experience like he had as a kid playing in Tully. Dom encourages them to have fun but to develop their co-ordination and skills at their own pace in a team environment.

South Coast
This weekend is set to be a blockbuster as two contenders for the National Premier League (NPL) men’s league go head-to-head, with Gold Coast Knights taking on Peninsula Power this Saturday.
Last week the Knights added to their impressive streak taking their unbeaten run to 10 games after securing a 5-1 victory against Gold Coast United.
The comprehensive win further showcased the attacking threat the Knights possess, reminding other teams that they have goals across the park.
Knights’ midfielder Samuel Klein along with Joel Russell up top both scored braces, with Taisei Kaneko’s goal rounding off the extensive score sheet.
If Peninsula are to challenge the Knights, they will have to find a way to silence one of the NPL’s most potent attacks.
Peninsula are looking to replicate the performance that handed the Knights their first and only loss of the season.
Since Peninsula’s victory over Knights earlier in the season, the Power’s defensive prowess has been the staple to their climb up the table.
In their last four games Peninsula have kept three clean sheets, with Jordan Thurtell announcing himself as one of the form keepers in the league.
If their last meeting is anything to go by, Peninsula’s defence will be more than up to the challenge against the Knights attack.
This weekend’s clash could be a preview of what’s to come in finals, as both teams look to be on a crash course to meet again in August.
The match kicks off 5pm Saturday at Croatian Sports Centre in Carrara.

On Saturday, Mackay Lions travelled to Gladstone to face Central FC in Round 5 of the Kappa Queensland Women’s Cup.
Lions started strong with Katrina Sellar scoring the opening goal in the 22nd minute.
Central FC equalised in the 33rd minute, but Katrina Parry put Lions back in the lead before halftime.
Lions held off Central FC in the second half to secure a 2-1 win and a spot in the regional final where they will face FQPL Northern Women’s heavyweights MA Olympic.
Magpies FC cup run over
Magpies FC travelled to Townsville for a highly anticipated regional final clash against Southside Comets in the Kappa Queensland Cup on Saturday.
The Comets took an early lead, finding the net in the 13th minute before Magpies’ Matt Wilson levelled the score in the 28th minute.
Comets struck again just before halftime, putting Magpies down 2-1.
Despite a strong effort from Magpies, the Comets netted two more goals in the second half, securing a 4-1 victory and ending Magpies’ cup run.
FQPL Match of the Round
It’s gearing up to be an electrifying showdown in the FQPL Women’s competition as ladder leaders, Mackay Lions, gear up to host Whitsunday United.
Whitsunday United, fresh off a surprising loss against Magpies FC, will be keen to reclaim their winning form.
Meanwhile, Mackay Lions remain undefeated this season, boasting the best attacking and defensive lines in the competition.
Adding to the excitement, Lions’ home ground will also play host to a thrilling showdown in the FQPL Men’s league.
Third-placed Mackay Lions will face off against fourth-placed Mackay Rangers on Saturday night. Both teams are determined to bounce back from recent losses with a strong performance.

Sarina Saints U8s
Sarina Saints under-8s is one of the club’s biggest teams.
This year, the team is learning new skills such as throw-ins and corners.
They have been focusing on defence and passing the ball, which is really showing great results in their games.
They are lucky to also have two superstar girls on their team.

The Cooroora United Football Club under-9 Red Wallabies squad is the Sunshine Coast MiniRoos Team of the Week.
The club is extremely welcoming and strives to create a fun and inclusive environment for everyone.
The U9W Red Wallaby families have come together in 2024 with an amazing enthusiasm that encourages the character and talent of all the children.
More than half the team members are playing football for their first season, and they’re literally taking to the game like “ducks to water”.
A team spokesperson said “Whilst the team is an eclectic bunch, there is a real camaraderie being developed among all of the children, which is an obvious outcome for great teams and team sports in general.
“We have some real characters in the team, which is evident in the team photo.
“We had a wonderful win that day (3-2) against a very energetic and talented opposition, with a wonderful three goal haul by Harlen (Awesome job little man!).
“Though it’s always exciting to win, our focus from Coach Mitch and the broader family unit is to ensure the children have fun, feel included and gain a positive experience within a team environment.
“No matter what level of talent the children display, they all have an equal part to play within our team “The Legends”, as we affectionately refer to them as.
“As we progress through the remainder of the season, the children will no doubt gain confidence and develop some wonderful football skills.
“Importantly, however, we are endeavouring to grow strong, independent and humble children that will be able to relate confidently in all endeavours, ultimately contributing to their overall success as individuals.”

Darling Downs
We’ve hit the halfway mark in the season and for Rockville Rovers and Chinchilla Honeybears, there is plenty on the line in their weekend clash.
Sitting in third place, 12 points adrift of the league leaders, Rockville’s premiership dream looks to be slowly slipping away.
Rockville know they will need to be almost perfect until the end of the season to have a chance of catching Willowburn White and Highfields Green but must be careful not to lose their place in the top four.
Sienna Lockwood has been inspirational going forward for the Rovers this season, scoring 13 goals to sit third in the golden boot race.
Lockwood has been ably supported by Sheniya Bell and her sister Madison, who have chipped in with nine and six goals respectively this season.
Sitting in fifth place, Chinchilla are in a similar situation to Rockville, ruing their two recent losses which has seen them fall six points adrift of the top four.
Finals football will still be a goal for the Honeybears, who will look towards the 2023 FQPL Darling Downs Women’s player of the year Sally Carroll to inspire them to three points against their top four rival Rockville.
Mazy Gaze and Casey Hogan will be other players to watch this weekend, each providing plenty of goal threat themselves alongside Caroll.
The stage is set for a top-quality battle between some of the Darling Down’s best female footballers.
Make sure to head down to Captain Cook Oval at 5pm this Friday to watch this one play out

In the FQPL Women’s competition, Estates FC will host Townsville Warriors in this weekend’s match of the round.
Both teams have had a turbulent first half of the season; a win for Estates FC could move them into third place if Riverway JCU lose to Brothers Townsville.
Meanwhile, a win for Warriors will see them move into third, dropping Estates out of the top four.
In the FQPL Men’s competition, Brothers Townsville will host Riverway JCU at Hi Vista Park on Saturday night.
Brothers have had a great first half of the season and will look to continue that form. Meanwhile, Estates FC need a win to stay in touch with the top four.
