The Edge Hill Tigers Under-12 boys’ team have put their junior program on the map after returning home with prestigious silverware after a nailbiting final.

The Filippo Mele 40th Year Memorial Carnival, held in Townsville, attracted teams from diverse locales including Port Moresby (PNG), Mt Isa, Airlie Beach, and prominent local clubs such as MA Olympic, Townsville Warriors, and Brothers Football (Townsville).

The Tigers side filled with rising juniors battled against the best and returned with the Filippos Mele Trophy.

Tigers Under-12 Coach Claude Yasmine said his side were underdogs from the beginning.

“Winning this event is a major feat for any team, but it was made more special by the fact that half of these boys were playing up an age group,” he said.

“The team was mostly 11 year olds and we competed and beat two Under-13 teams along the way to the final.

“It was a super effort from our boys who valiantly represented Cairns and has helped put Edge Hill United Football Club juniors on the map.”

The intense three-day event came to a dramatic finale against Townsville Warriors in the championship final.

The match was tightly contested, ending in a 1-1 draw after extra time and ultimately decided by a 3-1 triumph in the penalty shootout in favour of the Tigers.

Meanwhile, Edge Hill United Premier Men will take on Whitsunday United Football Club in the next round of the Mitre FQPL Champions League this Saturday night at Whitsundays Sports Park.
