The TSSS North Queensland Toyota Cowboys Cup and Shield competitions continued on Wednesday with four thrilling fixtures in the open competitions on Wednesday afternoon.
Ignatius Park College notched its first win of 2024 in the Cowboys Cup, toppling Kirwan Black 28-16 in a hard-fought contest.
Iggy Park coach Jake Riley said his team had to dig deep to come away with the two points.
“It was a great battle from the start,” Riley said.
“The Iggy left edge showed plenty of speed down the sideline while Kirwan showed some flair in attack but fell just short and will look to improve.”
Kirwan Red, the school’s other team in the Cup competition, beat an undermanned and underpowered Heatley State High School 66-0 in a memorable outing.
Thuringowa State High School had the bye.
In the Shield the William Ross Rhinos fell to a classy St Anthony’s outfit 32-0, but Rhinos coach Jarva Sheerans said his young team was still in the process of building.
“We only have one year 12 student so it’s a bit of a building year for us,” Sheerans said.
“I think we’ll take some positives out of our halves’ work as well as some of our forwards filling in out of position.
“A team of their (St Anthony’s) calibre probably could have been in the next grade up, but it was a good reality check for us.
“We played well in the first half but our lack of substitutes came back to get us.”
Townsville State High School scored on the final buzzer to claim a 26-22 victory over Pimlico in a nailbiting contest.
Pimlico captain Jack Rushton starred for his side but wasn’t able to carry them over the line as they fought and scraped until the end.
Tec-NQ had the bye in the Shield. The Cowboys Cup and Shield competitions continue next Wednesday.
