Cairns cricketers were able to dodge the torrential downpours the region has seen over the past few weeks, getting on the park at Cazalys Stadium to play the grand finals that culminated the season that was for the majority of grades.
Saturday’s proceedings kicked off with a thrilling under-18 Jimmy Maher Cup, as Rovers prevailed over Atherton by just four runs.
From there we saw Mulgrave get the best of Muddies in the third grade grand final, before Saturday’s action was capped off with Norths cruising to victory over Mareeba in the senior women’s grand final.
In the first grade semi-final, Norths were far too strong for Rovers, winning by nine wickets and led by a massive 90* not out from Aidan Firman.
On Sunday, it was Atherton who had its chance to prevail, defeating Mulgrave in the fourth grade grand final.
See which players stepped up in the biggest way in the season finale.
First grade
Aidan Firman (Norths) - 90* (57)
Norths’ star opening bat stepped up in a big way for his side in their semi-final victory, seeing them home to what was ultimately a very comfortable run chase.
Elliot Lord (Norths) - 5/20 (8 overs), 40 (63)
The other half of the equation for the victors, Lord was simply too good with ball in hand. He also partnered well with Firman at the top of the order to steer Norths to the win.
Andrew Phelps (Rovers) - 43 (69)
Phelps was Rovers’ best performer as they searched to put together a competitive total.
Senior Women
Elisha Ayson (Norths) - 60 (32)
Ayson was the driving force behind a formidable total for her side, as they put up 6/161 in 20 overs.
Trish Spry (Mareeba) - 2/20 (4 overs)
The best of Mareeba’s bowling attack, Spry also took the catch to dismiss Ayson.
U18 Jimmy Maher Cup
Max Costello (Rovers) - 32 (45), 2/17 (3 overs)
Costello was a driving force for Rovers with both bat and ball, solidifying their innings through the middle over before picking up a pair of key wickets during the dramatic run chase.
Cooper O’Brien (Atherton) - 2/3 (4 overs), 33 (84)
In a similar vein to Costello, O’Brien was a solid all-round performer for Atherton, with his bowling in particular being both damaging and economical.
Third grade
Anish Varghese (Mulgrave) - 41 (53)
Set the tone for a well-paced innings at the top of the order.
Adam Lucas (Muddies) - 4/14 (7 overs)
Was the driving force behind keeping Mulgrave mostly under wraps, despite his side ultimately not being able to chase their target.
Sherjin Selvaraj (Mulgrave) - 3/19 (7 overs)
In what was a strong team effort across the board with the ball, Selvaraj stood the tallest, picking up three scalps for his troubles.
Fourth grade
Saminda Kaviraja (Atherton) - 46*
Led his side to their successful run chase to secure the premiership for Atherton.
Steven Lesina (Mulgrave) - 53
Lesina was a key presence through the middle order for the defeated Mulgrave, as they set a target of 135 to win.
At the time of publication the second grade grand final had yet to be completed.
