TEAM OF THE WEEK
1. Lachlan Brown (St Patrick’s)
The fleet-footed fullback enjoyed a sensational opening 40 minutes where he scored a try, had a hand in a couple of others and made metres through the middle for fun. His kick returns, and ability to beat the first man on most occasions, gave St Pat’s an immediate leg up.
2. Calvin Ramos (St Patrick’s)
Scored two tries as St Patrick’s dominated their cross-town rivals in a 66-0 thumping. A strong performance from the Mackay winger.
3. Kye Connell (Ignatius Park College)
A lot of Iggy Park’s points were scored down the right edge but Connell made his touches count when the ball came his way. Threw out a big ‘don’t argue’ on his way to the tryline for a spectacular try not long after halftime.
4. Solomon Terare (Ignatius Park College)
Terare scored two tries as Iggy Park tore Holy Spirit’s left-edge defence to shreds in a dominant showing. He’s a strong centre that will break plenty of tackles this season.
5. Clarvarn Oth (Kirwan SHS)
The big Bears winger scored a try and threw a perfect late offload to set up his halfback all within the first 10 minutes. Continued to play well with some great runs out of his own half.
6. Joshua Toby (St Patrick’s)
Had his fingerprints all over St Patrick’s big win. Set up his outside men with precision short-balls, and wasn’t afraid to take the line on with some straight hard running. Scored two tries to cap a scintillating performance which included three try assists and a big hand in a fourth.
7. Riley Carbone (Kirwan SHS)
The Bears co-captain scored a hat-trick and set up another try with his slick ballplaying just five minutes into the game when he helped unlock space for Clarvarn Oth down the right sideline. Reliable from the tee with three goals.
8. Mark Morrow (St Patrick’s)
Enjoyed some fresh air in the back-field on a couple of occasions and didn’t look daunted by it. Ran hard lines, supported his halves well and scored a solo try in the dying minutes where he single-handedly beat seven defenders on his way to the line. He is a special talent.
9. Tristian Martin (St Augustine’s)
Two tries from dummy half as the crafty hooker caught the Bears hibernating at the end of each half. Good heads-up play, and more than held his own in defence against a physical pack.
10. Cayde Miller (St Augustine’s)
A powerful performance from the big prop. Made good metres with his strong runs and played a big role in defence.
11. Noah Solomon (Ignatius Park College)
Was devastating on the edge, breaking tackles with almost every run. Capped off a strong performance with a nice try in the second half.
12. Keenan Bone (St Patrick’s)
Look up the definition of ‘explosive’ in the dictionary and you will find this backrower. Ran hard off the right shoulder of his halfback and left track marks on the front of his opposite number on multiple occasions.
13. Mathew Belyea (Kirwan SHS)
Belyea’s relentless work at the start of the game laid the platform for Kirwan’s backs to shine. Front-loaded his efforts and left plenty of bruises on the Saints boys with his big hits.
14. Cooper Reinders (Ignatius Park College No.14)
Ignatius Park’s super sub came on and bagged a double within five minutes of the second half kicking off. Nice sharp work from the impact dummy-half.
15. Adam McSherry (St Patrick’s No.7)
McSherry might have taken a backseat to his halves partner, but it didn’t stop him having a major influence on the contest. His ball-running ability is second to none among schoolboys halves and he constantly had the Mackay High side under pressure.
16. Jack Vella (St Patrick’s No.14)
The utility took over at dummy-half and looked at home behind the ruck. Was not afraid to get his side up and over the advantage line and threw a magical cut-out pass on the opposition tryline to set up his five-eighth for an easy try.
17. Mitchell Kennell (Mackay SHS No.8)
It was a thankless game to be a middle forward for the Mackay SHS side but he refused to shirk his workload across the contest. Ran the ball with gusto coming out of his own end and came up with a few bone-rattling tackles.
