Less than 24 hours after pulling off their biggest win of the season, Queensland Thunder women were back doing what they have done so impressively this Australian Water Polo League season - take care of business.

The Thunder, fresh from sinking the UNSW Killerwhales 24-3 on Saturday, made the 170km journey up the M1 to Newcastle and put on another clinic to sink the Hunter Hurricanes 17-7.

Alice Williams and Kasey Dalziel both scored three goals while Kate Blew, Molly Nasser, Charlize Andrews and Jessica Emerson contributed doubles.

The victory took the Thunder to 16 wins from 17 games, with three games left against Hunter and Fremantle Marlins.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes men’s team have now three games in a row - and with an undeniable chance to make it four on Monday - after a tight 5-3 win over the Thunder.

Hunter, who lost their first 11 games, have now beaten Victorian Phoenix (twice) and Queensland to move up to eighth on the ladder.

PREVIEW

With a new coach and fresh mindset, the Queensland Thunder men’s team is hoping to set itself up for future Australian Water Polo League success.

So forget their lowly position on this season’s ladder, coach Georgina Kovacs-Muller says the building blocks are there ‘for the next two to five years’.

“We obviously face big challenges (at the moment), but I always try to look at them as opportunities rather than a challenge,” Kovacs-Muller said.

“Though we may not make the top six, it’s still a big improvement on last year.”

The Thunder are set to take on Hunter Hurricanes in Sunday’s AWL double header as part of 10 matches across five days to be streamed LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from Thursday.

Kovacs-Muller joined the coaching staff just a few months before the season started and now leads a young, inexperienced team, which she said is full of potential.

“I think the average age of our team is around 21,” Kovacs-Muller said.

“We have a few 24 or 25 year olds, but the majority of the players are 18 or 19-year-olds.

“So the biggest challenge is definitely the age, and also the difference in the level of competition they’ve been exposed to.”

The Thunder picked up a surprise win early in the season, taking down current finals contenders UWA Torpedoes 7-5 away from home.

Although they’ve suffered some heavy losses against the top teams, Kovacs-Muller said right now their aim is to show consistent improvement throughout the season and play some good water polo.

“We’ve had some really promising games, but also some games where we just weren’t paying attention,” she said.

“We’ve also had some extremely good quality periods in the game where we showed we were able to keep up with some of the Sydney teams.

“We’ve shown some really good potential and I think the next step is to follow through, so I’m really looking forward to what we can build in the next two to five years.”

Kovacs-Muller said she and the team set expectations on what they wanted to achieve this season.

“I want everyone to be coming away with a sense of belonging and positivity after the season,” she said.

“And that they see what I see in terms of things that need to be done and then jumping on with the work.

“I do not expect wonders from the team, but we have set standards that we want to play by, regardless of whether we play against an Olympic champion or a junior player.”
