He is the North Coast rising star who is about to set a code bidding war ablaze.

But for now, Coffs Harbour Snappers young gun Kden Carter is simply the King of the Country.

The fleet-footed flyhalf was completely dominant for the Snappers as they ran out unbeaten champions at the King of the Country tournament on the Gold Coast.

The team with the furthest travel, made sure every kilometre of travel up the Pacific Highway was well worth it as they cruised to a 31-0 win over Noosa Dolphins in the Under-16 decider.

It capped off a weekend in which the Snappers scored more than 142 points, and only conceded one try across four games of rugby.

Carter, who is both a North Coast Bulldogs and Waratahs Next Gen representative across both rugby codes, was at the heart of the red and blacks’ dominance.

He scored a sublime solo try and set up two others in the final, with his slick footwork through the middle of the field causing headaches for the Dolphins.

Carter worked brilliantly alongside scrumhalf Darcy Cruickshanks, while fullback Peter Hammond chimed in well across a big weekend of action.

Gold Coast Eagles finished in third-place after overcoming Gold Coast rivals Bond Pirates 15-10 in Sunday’s play-off final.

The Gold Coast Eagles Under-14s side stopped Helensvale’s hopes of back-to-back titles in its tracks with a dominant display of rugby on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles, led by a dynamic performance from slick playmaker Zavier Ngauamo, were unstoppable on their way to a 27-5 win over Gold Coast rivals the Hogs in the grand final.

It capped a perfect weekend for the home club, who had emerged from the regular rounds undefeated and kicked off Sunday’s action with a 52-5 demolition of the Toowoomba Bears.

Casuarina Barbarians finished with the bronze medal in the under-14s after they beat the Bears 26-10 in the third-place play-off.

PREVIEW

The best rugby teams in southeast Queensland and northern NSW will be crowned when the King of the Country takes over the Gold Coast Eagles rugby fields.

Each division will feature regional competition winners from the Darling Downs, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Far North Coast (NSW) competitions.

Tournament hosts, the Gold Coast Eagles, have also earned wildcard entry into both age groups.

Eagles president Grant Steffek said the club enjoys hosting the tournament and being part of growing the sport in regional areas.

“The original objective of the tournament still applies... bring highly engaged champion teams from regional areas together to play some tough rugby.

“Regional areas often have 1-2 teams that dominate in their playing grade and this tournament gives those teams an opportunity to be tested, plus the Gold Coast is a great spot to come for a mini-tour and holiday as a team,” Steffek said.

Importantly for the club, the King Of The Country tournament also generates revenue to fund junior and youth programmes throughout the season.

This year marks a key growth for the competition as it reaches further than ever before.

“We decided to extend the reach of the tournament this year into Mid North Coast NSW to complement existing regions of Sunshine Coast, Downs, Gold Coast and the Far Noth Coast,” Steffek said.

“Despite financial and logistical challenges, there is strong interest in the tournament with some teams contacting us last October to express interest.

“Live streaming is becoming part of what tournaments do... Kommunity TV has been with our club for 4 years now and helps connect the tournament and the people within communities from the regions that cannot travel.

“Our club is always looking to create a great rugby experience and KTV helps us achieve that.

Coffs Harbour Snappers, who will compete for the Under-16 King of the Country crown, will travel the furthest for the tournament after taking out the FNC Rugby title last year.

They will be joined by fellow FNC rugby counterparts Casuarina, who will compete in the Under-14s.

The Noosa Dolphins will travel down to take on the Snappers in the Under-16s while the boys from the Toowoomba Bears will enter the Under-14s fray.

Gold Coast champions Bond University (Under-16) and Helensvale Hogs (Under-14s) round out the competition, with the Hogs aiming for back-to-back Under-14s titles after their dominant 32-7 win over a combined Far North Coast side last year.
