Live stream: Sydney club Oatley looking to make impression at Pacific Youth Rugby Festival

These rugby young guns have connections to 20 different nations and high hopes of taking home a title at the three-day Pacific Youth Rugby Festival in Brisbane, which kicks off on Friday.

One of the most proactive junior rugby clubs in NSW, Oatley in Sydney’s southeast is sending two teams to the tournament - and they have a history of strong performances.

Back in 2022, they sent an U12s team and nabbed a third place. Last year, another U12s team finished second.

Oatley are travelling with both U12s and U14s rugby players as a multicultural team at the festival.

Manager and Oatley vice president Suzie Tohme, and other volunteers at the club, have worked overtime to ensure they will not just turn heads on the field, but also off it with special jerseys reflecting the multiculturism of the teams and the Sydney club.

“We are in Oatley colours but every jersey is personalised with the flag of their heritage on the jersey,’’ Tohme said.

“We have 23 different heritages, including Australian, Latvian, Greek, Maori, Lebanese, Islander, Tongan, Phillipino, Scottish, German. Portuguese, Fijian, Samoan, and Italian.

“They just want to enjoy their rugby and play as one team.”

Tohm said while the 12s were looking forward to their first rugby trip and the competition against other teams, the 14s going into the event with hopes of a successful event.

“The 12s have been training hard, but this is their first tournament and we just want them to enjoy the experience,’’ she said.

“The 14s know they are going there to play rugby.

“The goal is to cause a friendly stir.’’

Tohm said the 14s played up a year in the Sydney rugby competition and gained from the experience, finishing second to Lindfield.

The Pacific Youth Rugby Festival in 2024 is being contested by a record number of teams in Brisbane.

Numbers have almost doubled since 2023 with more than 1000 young guns playing in 60 different teams at the event.

This year age groups will run from the under 10s to the under 18s.

Teams representing come from a wide range of backgrounds including New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and South Africa.
