Geelong netballer Emma Daffy believes NSW and South Australia will be Victoria’s biggest challengers in reclaiming its gold medal status at next week’s Marie Little Shield.

Daffy, named captain for Victoria after serving as vice-captain in recent years, said the team was determined to go one step better after a silver medal finish to NSW in 2024, after claiming gold the year before.

“We’re ready to get that gold back,” Daffy said.

The national tournament has run since 2013, and features women with an intellectual disability, with Daffy and her teammates bound for Brisbane next Thursday before competing at Nissan Arena from September 5-7.

KommunityTV’s exclusive live stream coverage will include every match from the tournament and will be completely free to view for netball fans.

Daffy, diagnosed with autism at two-years-old, has been a long-time member of the team, playing her first tournament in 2019 and winning player of the tournament in 2022.

The 24-year-old, who plays both goal attack and goal shooter, said she felt “a lot of passion” playing for Victoria.

“I think the most special thing about it, is there is competition for women with disabilities in general, and that we can explore that opportunity,” she said.

Daffy believed she was ready to step up as captain, despite the initial disbelief learning of her appointment.

“More shock than anything else, shocked but excited,” she said.

Daffy said preparations under longtime coach Naomi Linossier had included working on teamwork and practising combinations with a number of new teammates joining the 10-player squad this year, including AFL Barwon All-Abilities League netballer Jess Weinberg.

“Trying to make them included in the team environment as well,” Daffy said.

Daffy has largely focused on playing E-grade netball at Lara this season, stepping away from AFL Barwon all-abilities competition in a bid to further challenge herself at the Cats.

“In my free time I go to the netball courts (at Lara or Kardinia Park) and practice my shooting,” she said.

Furthering her passion for fitness and sport, Daffy is a personal trainer, with weekly sessions with several new clients this year, while away from the court she spends ample time with her three-year-old sausage dog Yoshi.
