MATCH REPORTS
INTERMEDIATE BOYS
Pool A - Kelvin Grove 3 d Palm Beach Currumbin 1
Queensland U16s schoolboys star Zak Fowler bagged a first half double as Kelvin Grove SC secure a cherished intermediate boys.
Fowler was fantastic in the first 40 minutes, and remained strong in the second on the back of some elite efforts from his teammates, with soaking wet boots on.
His only blemish was a missed penalty goal in the second half, but it was not needed in the end as the boys in green proved too strong.
The jinking Jin Kim, on his home turf at Wynnum, landed the final blow for Kelvin Grove to make sure of the result, scoring a goal in the 79th minute.
After a gruelling first 24 minutes, Fowler broke the deadlock with a wonderful first touch and finish into the bottom left of the goal.
Then, another great right foot finish from Fowler in the 32nd minute saw his side take a dominant 2-0 lead, with a one-two combination working a treat.
Kelvin Grove could have had their third goal moments later but some incredible scramble defence kept them out.
Finally PBC got on the board through Adam Shaker, who got the Reds faithful cheering with a classy penalty.
Pool B - Corinda 1 lost to Southport 2
Southport SHS have soared to victory in an exciting match-up that had spectators on the edge of their seats.
Southport took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute and were clinical in ensuring Corinda stayed at arm’s length.
A deft touch from Logan Glewis allowed for a superb finish in the box for the Gold Coast boys.
Corinda rallied, coming alive towards the end of the first half, but they couldn’t find a break through and trailled 1-0 at the break.
A fine left foot finish from Harrison Hawyes levelled things up early in the second half.
But it only stirred Southport into action and the skills of Hibiki Tamioka sone through, with the young gun assisting on Southport’s second goal scored by Tanai Kunst.
Centre back Che Diamond also played his socks off for Southport in a marvellous victory.
JUNIOR GIRLS
Pool B - Corinda 2 lost to Aspley 2 on penalties
Aspley SHS are the Pool B junior girls champions after a penalty shootout thriller.
Aspley goalkeeper Coco Muengnoi was amazing in a gripping shootout, tilting the match her team’s way.
The match was a free flowing affair, with four goals by halftime and plenty of intrigue in the second half.
The goalscoring started with a terrific team effort from Corinda, finished by Georgina Robertson after Rani Sharma and Alex Hovath had combined.
Robertson also had a hand in Corinda’s second goal by perfectly lobbing a corner kick into the goal square where Lexi Underhill finished with aplomb.
Aspley’s first goal came courtesy of a brilliant individual performance from Mia Afoa who, with nothing on, drove a ball from the right hand sideline over the keeper and into the goal. It was a moment worth bottling.
Then came a great goal from Aspley’s Nella Bodlak, who deftly chipped the ball into the back of the net after indecisive play by Corinda at the back.
Pool A - Chancellor 0 lost to Kelvin Grove 0 on penalties
Kelvin Grove’s Grace Pupovac scored the decisive shootout goal, and goalkeeper Zoe Reader made some crucial saves as Chancellor took the honours.
Kelvin Grove actually came from behind in the shootout to snare the title, with Pupovac driving home the critical goal and Reader saving a shot.
It had been a dour affair with two evenly matched teams struggling to break each other down.
The best chances came from long, speculative shots trying to catch the goalkeepers unaware.
JUNIOR BOYS
Pool A - Palm Beach Currumbin 2 d Kelvin Grove 1
Tano Miller was a hero as PBC SHS snared the winner five minutes from fulltime to take the junior boys premiership 2-1 over Kelvin Grove State College.
Miller helped deliver the title with a superb individual performance to snap a 1-1 deadlock.
Despite PBC being the better side, Kelvin Grove almost took the game into a penalty shootout.
Earlier, a screamer from PBC SHS’s Oliver Hoath-Bastion got his side back on level terms early in the second half.
Hoath-Bastion launched from about 25m into the wind, the ball beat a gallant keeper and sparked wild celebrations.
PBC SHS dominated the first half - but it was Kelvin Grove State College who led 1-0.
Such was PBC SHS’s domination, it took until the 32nd minute for Kelvin Grove to receive their first corner kick.
PBC, on the other hand,, earned a succession of corner kicks and a sprinkling of free kicks, but nothing could break down Kelvin Grove goalie Xavier Montgomery’s resolve.
So how did Kelvin Grove score? Well, it was a brilliant piece of team play sparked by Juliann Alterman.
His cut back found Will Mifsud, who passed to Eddie Dunne and the move was finished by Savva Lucas.
Pool B - Murrumba State College 4 d Aspley SHS 1
Murrumba, who held a 2-1 first half advantage, scored the decisive goal through Callum Verschoyle, who brilliantly finished a cross from Diing Kuer.
It was his second goal, and a big moment in the final.
Kuer then scored the goal of the match with a brilliant individual effort to make it 4-1.
In the first half, Ty Parkin had also scored for Murrumba who, despite being the best side all season, were challenged from start to finish by a gritty Aspley SHS, who were up for the challenge.
