Visiting Palm Beach Currumbin wasted no time in making their Langer Trophy intentions clear on Redcliffe soil on Tuesday.

PBC’s 36-16 victory – live streamed by KommunityTV – appeared likely from the beginning as they went on to heap more pain on the winless Eagles’ season.

It was a matter of minutes before five-eighth Bailey McConnell offloaded to his centre Sam Stephenson who went over for an early try.

Redcliffe retaliated, but silky footwork from winger Bailey Simpson resulted in a break through the line.

A kick chase ensued from fullback Ray Puru, who grounded the ball in goal for PBC’s second try.

Redcliffe’s error rate was the downfall of their first half performance, with the score reading 20-4 and no luck in sight.

The second half was much the same, with Ray Puru going over again in the early stages.

Angst grew between the sides as both gave away countless penalties, but PBC remained dominant.

Quick play from halfback sensation Zane Harrison earned No. 12 Jac Finigan his moment of glory in the 10th minute.

A minor surge from the home side began when Redcliffe’s Lincoln Kemp stopped McConnell from making a 50m run.

Five-eighth John Fineanganofo made the most of it with a try under the posts which was converted, before a second quick try was scored by lock Loka Toia.

A final-play try from Harrison and successful conversion sealed the deal for PBC, who quickly left for their two hour trek home, another win under their belt.

The 16-36 score line left little for Redcliffe to celebrate, but the late scoring added something positive to dwell on.

Play of the day:

The play of the day came from a magic kick chase by PBC’s fullback Ray Puru in the first half.

Bailey Simpson made a break through the line and kicked from the wing.

Nudging the ball with his knees to avoid a knock-on, Puru gained possession and grounded the ball in the in goal to score PBC’s second.

It was converted with ease.

In the Walters Cup, Redcliffe State High School snagged victory over PBC 22-14 to put an end to their dry spell.

It was a nail biting second half that made all the difference when Redcliffe went from 14-4 down to triumph by eight points.

The visiting PBC side boasted a high completion rate through the match, which appeared to undo Redcliffe in the first 30 minutes.

Three quick tries, two conversions and a penalty in front however gave the home side a much needed push to the end.

The key moment came when PBC had a player sin binned late in the second half.

One man up, Redcliffe’s left winger pulled off a miracle kick chase and scored the try which cemented his side’s victory.

In a huge boost to both teams, ace halfback Zane Harrison will play his first game of the Langer season for Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, while new Australian schoolboy John Fineanganofo has declared himself fit to play for Redcliffe after starring for the Queensland 18 years at Kayo Stadium in the ASSRL Nationals last week.

Dolphins Academy player Fineanganofo scored two tries in last Friday’s playoff against ACT. He was also named prominently in the top 50 players list before - and after - the tournament. Another Queensland ASSRL representative, Aholoka Toia, will also play.

Toia mounted a case for being Queensland’s best forward at the nationals.

Fineanganofo hurt his shoulder at the nationals after coming off a Hostplus Q-Cup match for Redcliffe, but insists he will battle through for his school side.

The clash is Redcliffe’s first home game of the season and represents the ideal opportunity to make a big impression.

After a strong opening game where they scored 20 points in a defeat to Mabel Park, Redcliffe have since found the going tough against Ipswich and Keebra Park.

PBC coach Tim Maccan has his own Queensland schoolboy back in impressive centre Sam Stephenson after missing rounds 2 and 3.

But the big news is Harrison’s return, a year 12 student who had a big 2022 and who is looking to take PBC to success this season.
