A blockbuster run from front rower Lachlan Rotherty has put the icing on an impressive Dolphins Challenge performance as Emmaus locked in their spot in the semi-finals of both the Challenge and the Cup.
The big man cut back off his left foot, before hitting the afterburners past would-be Marist College defenders on his way to the try line.
It was an explosive start to the second half which set the tone for the home side as they hustled and bustled their way into the Dolphins Challenge semi-finals off the back of an impressive 40-18 win.
It kicked off a huge day for the school who also sewed up the minor premiership in the Dolphins Cup open age competition with a comfortable win over Rockhampton Grammar.
Both Emmaus and Marist College entered the Challenge clash on one win a-piece, desperately needing a win to sneak into the Year 10 competition’s top four, and they played like it.
While errors from both sides proved crucial in the opening exchanges, it took some individual brilliance from Emmaus five-eighth Will McLaughlin to break the stalemate and make the difference.

McLaughlin was involved in everything the Emmaus side did right, setting up tries with his impressive passing game and pinpoint kicking.
He set up first half tries for winger Ruben Evans and forward Sam Adams with slick ballplay in the lead-up before a cross-field chip found centre Hudson Keepkie for a match-sealing four-pointer midway through the second half.
Marist College, in their first foray in the Dolphins Challenge, refused to give up the fight and scored late in the first half through barnstorming lock forward Bailey Kelly to make it a six-point game at the break.
But that was as close as they got, with Rotherty’s impressive 50 metre solo effort kick-starting an Emmaus avalanche in the second half as they scored four tries to storm their way into the finals.
Emmaus made no mistake in the Dolphins Cup clash to finish the season undefeated on top of the table ahead of their finals campaign.
The Dolphins Cup frontrunners barely got out of first gear as they cruised to a 28-6 win over rivals Rockhampton Grammar.

Preview: Emmaus determined to keep their unbeaten run alive
Emmaus College will look to complete an unbeaten run in the regular season of the Dolphins Cup on Tuesday.
The ladder leaders will tackle Rockhampton Grammar School in the final round of the open schoolboys rugby league competition at 4.30pm.
Emmaus will play Marist College in the Dolphins Challenge at 3.30pm, and you can watch both games live on KommunityTV via this website.
It will be the first game for the Emmaus opens after their second-placed finish at the Confraternity Carnival.
Coach Mitchel Smith said they were determined to get the win on Tuesday, despite injuries ruling out lock Logan Barclay, front rower Declan Parr and centre Finn Smallwood.
“This will be a good chance for us to freshen up,” he said.
“The boys really want the win. We put a big emphasis on finishing first in the competition this year, so we had the 1v4 semi-final.

“I don’t care if we win by one point or 30 points, we just need to do whatever it takes to get the job done next week.”
Smith said he was impressed with his team’s fearless approach, and the “buy-in” from every one of his players.
“They’re not frightened of any opposition; they just want to hook in and do it for each other,” he said.
“It’s been great seeing them develop and realise their potential. There’s a real belief in this group.”
Smith named captain and front rower Bailey Meilland, centre Sam Durkin, fullback Seth Carpenter and five-eighth Clancy Hohn had been among the team’s best.
He said Emmaus would not be taking the winless Rockhampton Grammar lightly.
He said they boasted some talented forwards, including Cooper Mackenzie, who they would have to work hard to contain.
The Dolphins Challenge will act as a final audition for the finals series, with both Emmaus and Marist College on one win this season.
The winner of Tuesday’s Year 10 clash will snare the final spot in the top four ahead of the semi-finals.
