The NSWCCC conjured a heroic second half comeback to snare an epic 30-26 victory from the hands of the Queensland Schoolboys on a rain soaked Bellingen Park surface on Sunday.

The boys in blue and white trailed 16-0 one minute shy of halftime and 26-12 with less than 15 minutes left in the game.

Then three tries, all converted near the left touchline by sniper Jack Attard, flipped the game on its head as NSWCCC took their first lead of the contest one minute shy of full time.

NSWCCC looked down and out after Queensland playmaker Zac Herdegen scored an emphatic try to make it 26-12 with a little over 10 minutes to go.

But, seemingly running downhill, the comeback kings rose from the ashes to pile on 18 unanswered points and claim their first win of the ASSRL Championships.

In NSWCCC’s relentless final heave, Corpus Christi Catholic High School, Oak Flats left winger Lucas Borg scored the initial try to come within eight points and then scored the match-winning try on the cusp of time to capture his team’s first lead, 28-26.

With the clock dwindling down, NSWCCC’s interchange half Jack Thompson found Borg with a crossfield kick, but it was Borg who did all the work, dummying back inside before springing free to score in the left corner.

Zac Garton was impressive on a beaten side.

GARTON FIRST HALF MASTERCLASS

Destructive left edge enforcer Zac Garton, a Caloundra SHS boy born in Nambour, had his fingerprints all over Queensland’s near perfect opening stanza in Sunday’s wet weather skirmish.

The Dolphins signed second rower, who in the offseason mixed it with the club’s first grade players and received advice from Felise Kaufusi, was at his damaging best powering through contact and attracting a handful of defenders with each carry.

With halves Herdegen and Zane Harrison classy conductors, Garton shone to score a cracking try which complimented his powerful defensive work that saw him pluck an intercept, apply pressure on kick-chases and force two dropped balls with tackles.

When NSWCCC threatened to score their second try early in the second half, it was none other than Garton who jammed in from his edge to force a telling error and relieve pressure.

The following set the Queenslanders marched up the field and extended their lead to 22-6, Garton spinning out of a tackle to score his second try.

Jennifer Kimber scored a double as Queensland got their U18 girls ASSRL campaign off to a cracking start by beating NSW CIS 18-6.

Kimber scored just after halftime and again late in the match as the Queenslanders ran in four tries to one in a display that puts the rest of the competition on notice.

Amanii Misa scored barely 60 seconds into the game before Olivia Saley put the NSW side on the board.

But Queensland took control in the second half as Kimber and Nazlyn Waaka-Rhind showed their quality.

Meanwhile, NSW CHS scored 10 tries in a 50-point dismissal of ACT.

Winger Natalia Hickling scored a first half double as NSW CHS grabbed control of this contest early and hardly gave their opponents any time with the ball.

A 16-0 halftime deficit quickly got out of hand for ACT when they let in three tries in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.

After missing all four conversion attempts in the first half, Olivia Vaalele found her kicking boots after the brerak, landing five from six.
