The Cathedral College has halted St Brendan’s winning start to the Dolphins Cup in a bruising encounter at Rockhampton’s Kettle Park.

The victors ran in five tries to two to prevail 22-14 in the highly anticipated match-up.

TCC were desperate to return to the winner’s circle after dropping their game last week, while Brendan’s were eyeing three straight wins.

Prop Parker Gallagher and centre Harley Biles, in his first full game back from illness, were instrumental in the victory.

Coach Tony Martin said he was happy with the result, despite it being a scrappy win.

“It was an improvement on last week, which is what I asked for from the boys,” he said.

“They’ll rest up now and prepare for Confraternity.”

TCC were first on the board, with winger Isaac Dahler and second rower Alekisio Siale crossing in the space of four minutes to give their team an 8-nil lead 10 minutes into the first half.

But Brendan’s workhorse lock Harrison Hill helped turn the tide, putting in a mountain of work through the middle to help set up Brendan’s reply from Ryan Hardie.

The teams went to the break with TCC up 8-6 but Brendan’s levelled things up with a penalty early in the second stanza.

It was TCC who broke the deadlock as second rower Eli McKay caught a perfectly weighted bomb to cross with 12 minutes to go.

Braeden Perkins scored with minutes to extend TCC’s lead to 16-8 before Gallagher shored it up with seven to go.

Meanwhile, St Brendan’s Cayden Hoare had a day out in the Dolphins Challenge.

The dynamic left wing scored four tries, including a first-half hat-trick, in his team’s 28-14 win over TCC.

St Brendan’s coach Scott Minto said his side knew they would have to be wary of TCC who, after a blistering start against Emmaus in the competition opener, would no doubt be smarting after their second-round loss to Rockhampton Grammar.

“We expect them to be pretty physical and try to get it over us early, but we’ll just do what we’ve been doing,” Minto said.

“Hopefully we can get some momentum on the back of being patient, which is something we’ve shown and has really paid off for us so far.

“We’ve been playing some pretty good footy and been quite consistent.

“Obviously, two wins from two games is pleasing but, having said that, we’ve got a lot to work on.”

Minto said the emergence of some younger players had also been a highlight.

They included fullback Phillip Yock, centre Jay Marsh and five-eighth Lachlan Anderson, whose pass selection and decision-making has impressed the coach.

Harrison Hill vs Zac Bateman

Both played key roles in the Capras under-17 campaign this year. Hill was part of Brendan’s successful 2023 Confraternity Shield win and this form has further improved in 2024. Bateman was strong for the Queensland Country under-17s this year, as well as the Capricornia schoolboys in the recent state titles.

Brock Otto vs Cruz Beazley

Otto has been a revelation for Brendan’s in the opening rounds. The 2023 Capras under-16 front rower has evolved under the watchful eye of SBC strength and conditioning guru Mike Carron. His aggressive style of play is just what the doctor ordered and he will be a worthy bench replacement for the team’s starting trio Carter Ford, Jake Oberhardt and Simon Green. Beazley has impressed since he arrived at TCC from Western Australia this year. Part of the Capricornia under-18 side, he has been tough and relentless in the middle of the field. He will be looking to produce a big effort to help his team back to the winner’s.

Backs

St Brendan’s fullback Phillip Yock.

Phillip Yock vs Hayden Baker

Yock has proved his preferred position of fullback is where he belongs. One of Brendan’s best in the opening rounds, his unpredictable style of play has made life tough for opponents. Baker, who played fullback for the Capras under-17s, is also well suited at the back. Watch for him chiming in wherever space opens up.

TCC's Eli McKay.

Jake Murphy vs Eli McKay

Murphy will get his first taste of football for 2024 against a familiar face in TCC’s McKay. Both played centre for the Capras under-16 team in 2023, with Murphy taking a break in 2024 from the rigours of rep football. Murphy was strong against Langer Cup heavyweights Wavell College early in the year and will be keen to get some minutes in before Confraternity. McKay, fresh off selection in the Queensland under-18 team, will enjoy the match-up as well and will look to carry the ball strongly for his team.
