Ipswich State High captain Sam Martin threw on his cape, picked up the ball and burrowed under the Mabel Park defences to ultimate glory.
The exciting young dummy-half put his side on his back in the dying minutes to snatch a nail-biting 22-21 victory from the hands of a terrific Mabel Park SHS outfit.
Down 21-16 with three minutes to play, Ipswich SHS marched up the field through mountain men Kanaan Magele and Xzavier Timoteo, before a scoot from Martin out of dummy-half gave Samoan sniper Junior Saifiti a shot from right in front to win.

The gun metre-eating winger made no mistake, securing a rousing round two win which would have to be the game of the year thus far.
Mabel Park SHS prop Elijah Keung was a colossus in the Thursday night blockbuster played under lights at the North Ipswich Reserve.
He crashed over for two tries in the first half before Jackson Howe clinically popped over a field goal to give Mabel a 11-10 at oranges.
Switch lines worked a treat for both sides, with line running ace Keung almost bagging a hattrick and barnstorming Ipswich prop Xzavier Timoteo scoring a cracking try himself following suit after Keung had spearheaded Mabel’s strong first half performance.
With sniping hooker Ezra Leota and young gun Year 11 fullback Tawa Simpkin’s crossing the stripe in the second half and Maje Peachey producing a barrage of left edge raids, Mabel took control 21-16 heading into the exhilarating final stages.
With the game in the balance, Broncos Academy hooker Martin produced some timely magic to rescue Ipswich, keeping them in the winner’s circle and unbeaten after two epic rounds of competition.
Mabel Park SHS showed once again they are as good as anyone in this competition, with Keung, scheming rake Leota, Year 11 rookies Peachy and Simpkins and exciting forwards Chaev Kolone and DJ Talaepa all impacting the match in an inspired team performance.
Ipswich, who trailed for much of the match, were led by enormous props Xzavier Timoteo and Kanaan Magele who produced an incredible performance which allowed Tom Parker and Chris Simpson to see considerable success on the right edge.
IPSWICH SHS 22 (Sam Martin, Xzavier Timoteo, Tom Parker tries, Junior Saifiti 3 goals) def MABEL PARK SHS 21 (Elijah Keung 2, Ezra Leota, Tawa-Dean Simpkins tries; Jackson Howe 2 goals, 1 field goal)
WALTERS CUP
Ipswich SHS’s Year 10 side came alive in the second half to turn a 10-all deadlock at the main break to a compelling 36-10 victory.
Left centre Kahu Kitto scored two tries, lightning five-eighth Ira Yeatman a beauty and Viliama Seumalli a brilliant try of his own in a superb team performance where zig-zagging fullback Fletcher Ebsworth Briggs broke free multiple times in an inspired 60 minute performance.
Briggs, the younger brother of Ipswich SHS old boy Watjarra Briggs, was a kick return menace in the first half, squeezing through contact like he was covered in olive oil.
On one occasion he made a try saving cover tackle on Mabel prop Roy Sio who was charging towards the line, the scores level at 10-all.
Briggs’ deadly halves pairing of Ira Yeatman and MacGuiness Tiananga then took control of the match as Ipswich ran in an unanswered 26 points to storm past the finish line.
It was a case of deja vu for Ipswich SHS coach Shane Harris seeing fullback Fletcher, offloading whiz Tiananga and electric hot-stepper Yeatman sprinkle magic dust over the North Ipswich Reserve turf.
During his time as a coach at Ipswich SHS, Harris has coached MacGuiness’ older brother Titan, Fletcher’s older brother Watjarra and Ira’s cousin Ceasar (Year 11).
On Thursday afternoon, the emerging Year 10 trio set the second stanza alight with their off the whim playmaking and elite footwork, after Mabel boys Siah Salesulu and Isaac Tokam had scored a try each to set up a tense final 30 minutes.
PREVIEW
A powerhouse prop from New Zealand will help fly the flag for Ipswich State High School in their first Langer Trophy home game on Thursday against last year’s big improvers Mabel Park State High School.
Barnstorming 18-year-old Kanaan Magele, who is of Samoan heritage, was spotted by the Sydney Roosters playing in Auckland and has moved to the heartland of rugby league, in Ipswich, to test his skills in one of the country’s finest schoolboy rugby league competitions.
You can catch Magele and his teammates LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from 4.15pm on Thursday as part of a big Walters Cup/Langer Trophy double header.
Check out the full Round 2 LIVE STREAM schedule below.
In just a few short months Magele had made his presence felt in the elite Meninga Cup Under-19 competition for the Ipswich Jets and, more recently, in the Queensland Schoolboy Championships for Met West.
The 182cm, 110kg wrecking ball has played league his whole life, but dabbled in rugby as a No.8 last year for De La Salle College’s First XV in Auckland.
Born in Sydney before moving back to New Zealand’s North Island, Magele grew up loving Bulldogs bash brothers Sam Kasiano, Frank Pritchard and Greg Eastwood.
He will move to Sydney at the end of the year to join the Roosters SG Ball Under-19s outfit, but first he will be looking to spearhead Ipswich SHS to their third successive grand final.
“I had the choice to come here or stay in New Zealand but I decided to come here... because I would benefit from the footy that is here right now,” said Magele.
“I am liking the difference between New Zealand footy and Australian footy. Just like the intensity is way up there compared to what it is in New Zealand.
“In New Zealand you know who’s good and who’s not. Here they are all good.”
Ipswich SHS coaching staff have ensured Magele will be primed for the rigours of Langer Trophy football, with teenager shedding 10kgs to enter the season fit as a fiddle and ready to wreak havoc through the middle of the field.
“Ipswich has improved me a lot since I got here,” said Magele.
“Especially helped me cut weight because I got here at 120kgs.
“I went on a vacation to Samoa and gained heaps of weight, but came here and (John) Dore, (Shane) Harris and (Josh) Bretherton all just helped me get down, so now I am at a good weight (110kgs).”
Magele, who lifts a whopping 212kgs for reps on deadlift, finds motivation in 50 Cent’s classic ‘Many Men’ before games, but more importantly his family.
“I would say my whole family (is my biggest motivation),” said Magele.
“They are my drive. My motivation. My why.
“Them not being here drives me more to push for what I can do.
“Especially because they have been there since I have played from young. They have been helping me along the journey so I do it for them.
“I am looking forward to it (moving to Sydney in December), but not looking forward to the preseason.”
Magele will have his hands full on Thursday coming up against props Chaev Kolone and Elijah Keung, two of the best in the business.
