Langer Trophy R2 live stream: Wavell out to celebrate Homecoming with win over Marsden

After being ‘a bit complacent’ last year, Wavell will look to mark one of the school’s biggest days in style on Tuesday. Catch the Walters Cup/Langer Trophy clashes with Marsden LIVE from 5.15pm.

Wavell State High flyer David Filo scored a vital try seven minutes from fulltime to ice his team’s winning performance on a freezing night of Langer Trophy footy against Marsden SHS.

Filo flew down the sideline in front of a strong Wavell crowd to score the match-sealing try, as the home side ran out 24-12 winners after a seesawing contest.

Wavell centre Keyarn Pene set up the winning try with a dashing right side run, leaving defenders in his wake, before Filo finished it in style celebrating with a throng of his schoolmates at the back of the in-goal.

Wavell started the stronger of the two sides, scoring twice in the early stages before Marsden corrected course with a try just before the break to send the sides to halftime at 12-6.

Wavell’s early advantage came from its forward power and ruck speed which twice helped elite hooker Mason Philips to scamper territory, once setting-up Lisi Fa’oso to score.

The biggest man on the field, Wavell prop Kobi Floro, also impacted the first 15 minutes and it was one of his charges which brought his side to the brink of leading.

The ensuing shift of the ball left went through Charlie Dickson, Timahna Tandy and Keoki Koraba before Ruben Webb dove across the line in the same vein as Australia’s golden swim team into a 50m Olympic pool.

It was needed as he only narrowly escaped the oncoming Marsden cover defence.

The injection of the sizeable Marsden bench swung the momentum back towards the visiting side, and a build up of pressure would finally crack the Wavell line with back rower Cody Goulter crossing before half-time.

Impresive Wavell lock Dickson gave his side the upper-hand once again coming out of the break after he spun his way out of a tackle to plunge over.

Marsden refused to go away, and a tremendous kick chase effort saw Tupou Francis force an error. From the turnover Javon Andrews expertly put his centre Antonio Okusitino over for a converted try.

It brought the game back to a converted try the difference before Filo put the finishing touches on a fantastic clash.

It was a near thing for Marsden. They probably should have scored on halftime, but the last pass missed its mark, while only a desperate Wavell scramble prevented another try early in the second half.

WALTERS CUP

Wavell SHS scored three sizzling long distance tries and looks the team to beat in the competition after netting a 32-12 win over Marsden SHS.

With livewire halfback Charlie Webb complementing his team’s ruck speed, Wavell’s crisp passing and upbeat ball movement ensured they would take some watching in 2024.

Wavell SHS centre Boston Nau sped so fast to score an 85m solo try, it would not surprise if groundsman Jack Vizer finds scorch marks on his beautifully curated surface in the morning.

Running defensive ball out of their end, Wavell decided to go around Marsden instead of through them, which led to early ball for the speedy centre Nau.

Wavell scored a second time when winger Noah Cameron intercepted a pass and arced 65m to score.

It would make for an interesting foot race between Cameron and Nau, so fast were the pair of them.

Marsden did strike a blow on halftime when hooker Lavken Uluave fought his way over for a converted try, and it was anyone’s game at 12-6.

But Wavell’s fourth try after the break for winger Noah Cameron - after quick ruck ball and lightning hands - edged his team further ahead.

Wavell will draw on the passion of a noisy home crowd as they look to make amends for a narrow first-up Langer Trophy defeat when Marsden hit town on Tuesday.

It’s Homecoming and the game is Wavell’s only clash on their own patch in 2024, and coach Paul Stranley expects the stands to be full with students, friends and family.

“The games between us and Marsden are usually very close and it’s our big Homecoming event, so the players are excited for a big game,” he said.

“The whole school gets around it … probably the biggest sporting event on our calendar,” said Stanley.

“It’s our only home game of the term, we have a pretty tough draw up until the holidays.”

“The home crowd makes a difference … we’re not always going to win, but it’s good to have them behind us.

Wavell fell 28-26 to Keebra Park in the opening round last week despite a double from hooker Mason Phillips.

“Not getting the job done in round 1, the boys are pretty keen to make amends,” said Stanley.

“It’s an opportunity for the boys to lick their wounds, step up and represent themselves in front of the whole school.

“We were a bit complacent last year and didn’t have a win at Homecoming, so the boys are keen to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

“All the focus this week will be about us,” he said.

Wavell were one of the star performers of the 2023 Langer Trophy campaign.

Stanley isn’t concerned about meeting Marsden this early in the season.

“Marsden are always a strong team, we know that … to get the result, we need to be better in the things we do.

“Everyone in this competition is a very strong footy team.

“You’ve got to always be on your best to give yourself a chance.”

Last week Wavell had 11 starting players unavailable for various reasons, extending from season-ending injuries to wear and tear from state schoolboys titles.

“That’s the tough thing … balancing competitions,” Stanley said.

“A lot of coaches I’ve spoken to have serious injuries across the board so everyone’s dealing with the same thing, and there are no excuses.

“We just get on with it, that’s part of footy.”

In some ways, Stanley admitted the drastic roster changes brought on one major positive: seeing young talent perform under pressure.

“I guess that was the most pleasing thing, I know we didn’t come away with a win, but to see the young boys go out and have a run,” he said.

“Boys that probably didn’t expect to play Langer this early … stepped up and did the jersey proud.”
