Keebra Park State High School has reaffirmed its Langer Trophy title credentials with a scintillating 44-6 win over Redcliffe SHS.

The Gold Coast outfit bounced back from last week’s heartbreaking final minute loss to Marsden by heaping more misery on a Redcliffe team yet to taste success in the 2023 series.

Keebra exposed the Redcliffe defensive line in the eighth minute to open proceedings, with fullback Mason Barber finding a gap on the left edge to find the tryline to help his side to a 6-0 advantage.

A penalty soon after put Keebra within 20m of the tryline and hooker Isaiah Fagalilo caught Redcliffe napping in the 13th minute, with his pink head gear flashing out of the ruck before charging over the line as the Gold Coast team went up 12-0.

It was one way traffic as Keebra’s big boppers strolled down the middle of the field in the 17th minute before some aerial acrobatics from Joseph Tupuse on the left side made it 16-0.

Poor discipline hurt Redcliffe further, with a fresh set of six 10m out providing the welcome mat for Dorian Lotaki who burst out of dummy half to score under the posts as Keebra extended the margin to 22 points by halftime.

It took less than two minutes of the second half for the pain to worsen for Redcliffe.

Austin Marsters threw a dummy to his left before putting on the afterburners and cross before halfback Ryder Williams converted to make it 28-0

Minutes later Lotaki sparked a spectacular left to right spread, cutting out three players with a bullet pass, with winger Jeremiah Havea finishing the silky move as his side moved out to 34-0.

Prop Alec Schuster provided the only highlight for Redcliffe when he stormed over in the 13th minute before Marsters responded for Keebra with his double, showing off his pace to help propel Keebra to 40-6.

Williams did most of his damage with the boot throughout the game but celebrated with his own try late as Keebra ran out 44-6 winners.

Preview: Keebra determined to put heartbreak behind them

Keebra Park will be out to put their round two heartbreak behind them when they host a team desperately seeking their Langer Trophy breakthrough win on Wednesday.

The Gold Coast-based school provided some magnificent entertainment against Marsden in the prelude to the Titans v Tigers NRL match last Thursday, but an intercept try in the final minute meant they ended up on the losing side.

It was a tough result to swallow, especially considering the way they fought back twice from deficits to eventually take the lead on the back of a late penalty goal.

The next stop on their Langer Trophy journey is a visit from John Fineanganofo’s Redcliffe SHS - and you can catch every minute of that match, and the earlier Walters Cup showdown, from 4.30pm on Wednesday. See the full schedule below.

That Keebra opened their Langer season with an upset win over reigning national champions Ipswich SHS should still instil some significant fear into the minds of their opponents.

It’s been a tough season so far for Redcliffe. They are yet to find themselves on the winners’ list in 2023 following a 14-point loss to Mabel Park and 22-point defeat to Ipswich in the first two rounds.

But they can take heart from their performance against Keebra Park last year when they pushed the powerhouse right to the very end, eventually losing 28-12. It was the start of an impressive run of end-of-season form where they got so close to winning their first game.

John Fineanganofo will prove hard to stop for Keebra.

This year’s version will be relying on the talents of Dolphins-signed young gun Fineanganofo.

The five-eighth was labelled ‘best opposition danger man’ by Marsden head coach Matthew Hartigan, and it’s no surprise why.

He is a creative player and notably smart with the ball, making him a tough opposition for Keebra’s five-eighth Jack Hudson.

Meanwhile, Keebra halfback Ryder Williams (Titans-contracted) will look to continue his near perfect form with the boot following seven successful conversions from eight attempts.
