It was a night of late drama as Southern Suburbs Cockatoos completed a FNQRL clean sweep over Atherton Roosters. Watch all the twists and turns in our three replays.

Cockatoos lock Sonny Bin-Garape blasted through the heart of Atherton’s defence to score a match-winning try and end the Roosters’ unbeaten FNQRL A Grade streak at two.

The powerful middle forward broke a 12-all deadlock to raise Southern Suburbs to an 18-12 win with a powerful goalline charge.

Southern Suburbs captain Aidan Day will get the try assist on the statsheet after the prop’s tip-on pass caught Atherton by surprise, leaving Bin-Garape to gallop through a hole metres from the line and seal the deal in the top of the table clash.

Atherton had earlier fought back from a 6-0 deficit late in the first half to leave the match poised on a knife’s edge at about the 70 minute mark.

Enter Bin-Garape, in his 13th season of senior football, to produce the late magic and secure his side top spot on the FNQRL ladder.

Earlier at Alley Park, Southern Suburbs triumphed in the under-19s competition 30-16.

The best drama of the night belonged to Southern Suburbs’ reserve graders, who won at last gasp 22-20 over the Roosters Reggies.

Fullback Lance DeShong was sin-binned earlier in the contest but saved his best moment for last with his second try, scored at the death, to break Roosters hearts again.

It was a clean sweep in the three KommunityTV livestreamed matches for the Cockatoos.

Two sides in red-hot form to begin the Far North Queensland Rugby League season are set to go head-to-head in an exciting round three clash on Saturday night.

Southern Suburbs will host Atherton at Alley Park in a battle between two undefeated sides sitting first and second on the ladder.

The A-grade, reserves, under-19 matches will be live streamed exclusively on KommunityTV from 3pm.

The Roosters showcased their wares last weekend with an impressive 42-30 win over Innisfail, earning themselves a 2-0 start to the year.

However, the Cockatoos have gone one better, also unbeaten through two rounds and narrowly leading the Roosters on point differential to sit on top of the ladder.

Suburbs were particularly impressive in their round two win, defeating Edmonton 42-16 with second rower Ricki Sutherland running in a pair of tries.

Atherton has been even stronger in the reserve grade, sitting on top of the ladder with an extraordinary 76-point differential, having conceded just 12 points across two games.

It’s been a more up and down start to the reserves season for Suburbs, as after a brutal 40-4 defeat to Kangaroos in round one, they returned to win 20-0 over Edmonton.

In the under-19s, Atherton remains undefeated and looks to be a tough prospect on Saturday for a Suburbs side which is yet to play a game so far in the division.

The Cockatoos forfeited their opening round fixture before having the bye in round two.
