PREVIEW: Junior age forwards key to St Brendan’s charge
THEY are the two 16-year-old forwards that embody exactly what St Brendan’s College coach Scott Minto wants out of his side.
Jett Day and Tevita Penaia have the hard work and a no backwards steps approach to their football that have become the foundation to the school’s success this season.
St Brendan’s are undefeated over the opening rounds of the Dolphins Cup and appear destined for a showdown with the winner of the Aaron Payne Cup next month.
But any thoughts of what is to come will need to be put on the backburner for now as the Yeppoon heavyweights prepare for a showdown against Shalom College on Tuesday, in a match exclusively live streamed by KommunityTV.
Day and Penaia could be crucial cogs for the St Brendan’s side after the two under-age players impressed all-comers during the team’s run to the Confraternity Carnival semi-finals last month.
It was an impressive showing from the pair, especially after Day was a late call-up to the side’s second row.
“I lost my left second-rower the week before the carnival, and I had seen Jett play there for the Capras Under-16s a few times,” Minto said.
“I threw him the starting jersey and he was outstanding. He showed really strong defence and ran some great lines. He’s definitely staying in the starting side now.”
Penaia was also impressive in the Confraternity Carnival, aiming up against opposition front rowers from an entire age group above him.
The pair were both picked in the team of the carnival following the week-long football extravaganza in Mackay.
“I reckon we have the ability to go all the way to the Queensland final again this year,” Minto said.
“I have seen those resilience factors. When you are a smaller side, you need blokes that have got to aim up, that is something we have in droves.
“We have a big focus on trying to refine what we are doing and get really good at the little areas. We play a game, go back and review it and then refine as much as we can. We want to get it as close to inch perfect with our own game.”
