2025 Langer Trophy live stream: Wavell SHS v Stretton SC, Round 6

With finals right around the corner, Wavell State High made a statement in the Langer Trophy, putting competition newcomers Stretton to the sword. Watch the REPLAYS.

Indigenous fullback Timahna Tandy was in terrific tandem with his Wavell teammates during its 70-0 romping of Stretton on Wednesday.

Tandy, repping the NAIDOC strip he helped design, showed his class behind a roaring forward pack and in a slick spine that poured on points at a serious rate of knots.

Wavell scored 12 tries and the crafty Tandy scored one and set up three others as Wavell warmed its engines for the semi-finals.

With this win, the top-five finalists have been confirmed. Keebra Park, Ipswich SHS, PBC SHS, Redcliffe SHS and Wavell SHS will all progress into the new finals format.

Wavell, on their home turf, took next-to-no time to get on the board and as the match endured it was simply superb stuff from players one-through-17.

Halfback Charlie Webb scored and created two others and five-eighth Hayden Madders scored two and set up two to winger Boston Nau.

Wavell coach Paul Stanley made a few key position changes after last week’s 14-all draw with Marsden and the new combinations worked a charm in what was the last home game for the school’s seniors.

Lisi Fa’aoso was incredible adding punch off the bench, as was ferocious forward trio Romarion Tuitama, Pale Sosene and James Spicer.

Lock Payton Gifford was also grand moving from the halves to lock and creating arguably the best try of the match.

He stepped in and away to break through, offloaded to Saia Papani before getting the ball back and releasing Tandy who did the rest to score a 60m special.

Everyone was on their game.

Opposing centres Sangstar Figota (Wavell) and Kayzon Key (Stretton) were outstanding.

Figota broke tackles at will while Key’s gutsy defence never wavered.

Wavell could’ve slacked off when they led 34-nil at the break but instead they went up a gear. It was impressive seeing halfback Webb track down a runaway Lewis Gardner late in the game after the Stretton skipper broke the line and burst down field.

Gardner, showcasing the speed of an outside back, was dragged down metres before the line and Webb’s determination in cover defence typified Wavell’s unrelenting performance.

PREVIEW

Wavell State High’s little maestro Timahna Tandy will wear his heart on his sleeve, his chest, and rest of his upper body when the school goes into battle on Wednesday.

The fullback, who has played a key role in Wavell’s run to the Langer Trophy finals, also had a large hand in designing the school’s NAIDOC week jersey which they will don for this week’s clash with Stretton State College.

The Langer Trophy clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a double header along with the Walters Cup showdown between the two schools.

Tandy, a rising Indigenous playmaker from the southern Darling Downs, designed the jersey back in 2023 and this is the third and most-likely final time the jersey is worn before the baton is passed to another crop of students to design a new NAIDOC strip.

The clash will also double as the final home game of the season for Wavell’s senior playing group, who will be determined to see out their time on the school’s main oval in style.

“It’s a pretty big occasion for our seniors, the last time they’ll be playing at the school. This is when it starts to hit them,” Wavell SHS coach Paul Stanley said.

The seniors that will play for Wavell include Tandy, Ruben Webb, Sangstar Figota, Payton Gifford, James Spicer, Sonny Herdegen, Lisi Fa’aoso and skipper Hayden Polson.

A number of the senior group have stepped up this season, but none moreso than representative centre Sangstar Figota.

He was ultra-consistent in the first half of the season, before going to the next level after hsi week with the national title-winning Queensland side at the ASSRL Nationals.

Helping lead the charge alongside the fleet-footed Figota has been two standout Year 11 students, prop Dallas Davidson and Saia Papani, who have relished the jump in class from the Walters Cup.

“(Dallas) has been really strong every week,” Stanley said.

“We’ve had a few injuries in the forwards across the year and, as a younger student playing the toughest position on the field, he has been really consistent every week.

“He’s really impressed me and really surprised me with how he has taken to playing in the Langer Trophy.”

Papani was top notch for the Dolphins in the Cyril Connell Cup earlier this year and has maintained the rage to consistently make positive involvements for his school.

“He does a lot of the things that people don’t see but he’s super consistent,” Stanley said in praise.

“Super reliable, you know what you’re going to get from him.”

Papani might not be the guy making a 40m break on the regular but his effort and defensive work is “outstanding” on the edge.
