Palm Beach Currumbin State High School dominated from start to finish as it claimed a solid 36-4 win over Stretton State College in round 4 of the Langer Trophy on Wednesday.

Heading into the game, PBC coach Tim Maccan had high hopes for star trio Jai Bilish, Taj Lateo and Torino Jackson and it took just 12 minutes for all three players to repay him for his faith

The trio have led from the front as leaders in the Reds line-up and were once again the stars of the show.

Bilish and Lateo’s playmaking in the spine was elite as they created several try-scoring opportunities, while Jackson was a force to be reckoned with in the front row.

Bilish kickstarted proceedings with an impressive piece of individual skill in the fourth minute to cross over for the first try of the contest.

Then, just three minutes later, towering prop Torino Jackson forced his way over for the second try of the game before Lateo joined the party to score the Reds’ third try of the game after just 12 minutes.

It was all one-way traffic in the first half as the Reds went into the break with a comfortable 24-0 lead.

However, Stretton came out of the tunnel a completely different side and a glimmer of hope appeared when Jonah Huni scored a try in the 38th minute.

Ultimately the class of PBC shone through as the visitors flexed their muscle with three tries in the final stages of the second half to put the game beyond doubt and thwart any hopes of a miraculous comeback.

The Reds have now well and truly put their round 1 demons behind them and with three straight wins under their belt, are back performing at the level which saw them claim the national title last year.

SCHOOLGIRL CUP

A second-half blitz has guided Palm Beach Currumbin to an impressive come-from-behind win against Stretton College in the National Schoolgirl Cup.

Down 10-6 at the break, Stretton looked like it was going to pick up its second win in a row after a strong performance a week earlier against Mabel Park.

However, Palm Beach Currumbin lifted its game with five second half tries to claim a resounding 30-10 victory.

Kaylee Booth pulled all the strings in the halves with a stunning performance.

Her kicking game was a class above as she regularly put the Stretton defence under pressure.

Booth played a key role in the second-half barrage as she forced her way over for the go-ahead try in the 35th minute while setting up others.

Booth was supported by Saskia Croyston at lock whose efforts in the middle were crucial for the Reds.

She scored PBC’s first two tries of the game and was an imposing figure in the middle with several barnstorming runs.

PREVIEW

An exciting battle in the halves is set to take place when Stretton State College hosts Palm Beach Currumbin in round 4 of the Langer Trophy on Wednesday.

Stretton’s Jontaye Brown and PBC’s Taj Lateo will look to pull the strings for their sides and will both hold the keys to victory.

The matchup will be available live and exclusive on KommunityTV from 2.30pm with the Schoolgirls Cup clash to follow at 3.45pm.

The Palm Beach Currumbin v Mountain Creek Walters Cup clash from 1.20pm will also be streamed live and exclusive.

Brown has been a shining light for Stretton in their debut campaign in the Langer Trophy while Lateo has produced back-to-back dominant performances.

Lateo was recently named in the Queensland schoolboys team and has asserted himself as one of the leaders within the group alongside lethal hooker Jai Bilish and prop Torino Jackson.

“The guys I’ve been really impressed with are our leaders, Jai Bilish our captain and Taj Lateo and Torino Jackson our vice-captains,” Palm Beach Currumbin coach Tim Maccan said.

“They’ve just been getting better and better each week with their communication and also their performances, they’ve been in our top three performers every week now.”

Maccan also highlighted Brown as one of the danger players for Stretton along with their outside backs.

Maccan has been impressed with the response from his side in recent weeks after the title defence got off to the worst possible start with a shock 26-0 defeat to Mabel Park in round 1.

However, now with back-to-back wins under their belt, the beast within PBC has awoken and now has a chance to move to 3-1 with a win in the last clash before the school holiday break.

“If they do a great job on Wednesday and secure that 3-1 win-loss (record) it’d be really good, that’ll put us in a good position to start pushing for positions on the table and securing a finals spot,” Maccan said.

“We’ve spoken about being as close to perfect as we can, we’re playing against a team that’s new into the competition.

“I just want our boys to continue to focus on us and try and just be better with our completions, we’ve just been a little bit low on that the last couple of weeks so that’s one big area I wanted to focus on.”
