The pressure is on NSW Metro as they go for back-to-back titles at this year’s National Youth Championships in Victoria.

The girls breezed through to take the title in 2023 and coach Vic Guzman said the expectation is to do it all again.

“Pressure is privilege,” Guzman said.

“We want the pressure, to showcase these kids at the highest level competing to win.”

Guzman has some returning players from last year, along with a mix of Football NSW Institute and NPL players.

“It’s probably more of a different team,” Guzman said.

“We’ve got maybe five or six the same from last year but for the most part, it’s a fairly young team.

“It’s an exciting group, some of them won it with the U14s two years ago so they’re looking forward to playing at a higher level against what might be more challenging opponents.”

Grand final goal scorers Skye Halmarick from NWS Spirit and Amelia Cassar from Football NSW Institute are among those returning from last year’s success.

Halmarick was a standout in 2023, with her partnership with fellow Junior Matildas winger Sienna Dale totalling 12 goals between them over the tournament.

Guzman said she expected a really competitive tournament, with the extra day compared to last year potentially making a difference come grand final day.

“It’s a bit of a mixed pool unlike the year before,” she said.

“Queensland and Victoria are typically the states to beat, Victoria especially being the home state.

“We beat Victoria in the final last year and it was quite a big margin, so I’m sure they’ll be itching to come back.”
