Victoria Country has pulled off one of the upsets of the Basketball Australia Under-18 and Junior Wheelchair National Championships on Saturday, knocking off the previously undefeated Western Australia Metro outfit in men’s semi-final action.
REPLAYS: COURT 1 | COURT 3 | COURT 4
The boys from WA had put in a flawless campaign to date, finishing atop the ladder and winning their first final by 15 points, but the fight and belief of a Vic Country side with nothing to lose was too much for even them to overcome.
The 87-76 win ended as one of the games of the tournament with the momentum swinging throughout in both sides’ favour.
Will Hamilton was sensational for Vic Country in the win, finishing with a double-double (24 points and 14 rebounds) while Lucas Byrne also finished with a 16 points, 10 rebounds double-double.
Vic Country will now face New South Wales Metro in Sunday’s grand final after they finished 79-64 victors over South Australia Metro.
The two sides were the ladder leaders in pool B and played a classic opening contest that saw NSW take victory by just four points.
And with New South Wales Metro heading into the grand final with an undefeated record, Victoria Country will be hoping lightning can strike twice.
In women’s semi-final action, it was pool A leaders Victoria Metro and South Australia Metro that took convincing wins to advance to the grand final.
Facing their intrastate rivals Victoria Country, Vic Metro looked a class above in the 87-36 win with an incredibly even contribution across the board key in the result.
While Matilda Trout may have top scored with 11 points, six rebounds and two assists, every Metro player hit the scoreboard in a ominous sign heading into Sunday’s decider.
South Australia Metro also walked away with a stuffed box score in the 78-41 win over New South Wales Metro but three players showed their class when it truly mattered.
Sarah Warner (17 points, 11 rebounds and three assists), Olivia Tredrea (15 points, eight rebounds and two assists) and Keira Gardiner (15 points, seven rebounds and three assists) were all too much for NSW to handle.

Vic Metro has gone through the championships undefeated so far on the back of strong depth led by key talents Sitaya Fagan, Daisy Nousis and captain Taia McMechan.
They had an easy passage to the semis with a comfortable win over Queensland South, however Vic Country had to fight for their final four spot and left it late in a three-point victory against Queensland North.
In the other girls semi-final, NSW Metro will look to continue its unbeaten run against SA Metro when the two meet at 3pm on Court 1.
The Reds and Blues will be in action straight after as well with the boys sides squaring off in their semi-final at 5pm.
Victoria Country takes on WA Metro in a tantilising clash for the other boys final four match.
