Victoria Navy might have to get rid of the second string side tag after winning this year’s men’s under-20 national basketball championships.

The home team stunned Queensland in the final to win 95-77 and secure a second straight title for a Victorian team at the championships.

Navy took control of the contest early, storming to an eight-point lead in the first quarter off the back of a vocal home crowd.

But Queensland responded in the second quarter, with their leading player Roman Siulepa scoring 12 first-half points to drag the Maroons back into the contest.

Queensland outscored Victoria 28-17 in the second quarter to lead by three at the main break, 44-41. But drama was to follow.

Siulepa before the main break went off with a foot injury after trying to layup a shot with a couple of minutes to go on the clock.

He would get treatment at halftime from the physio but never returned to the court and his departure changed the match.

Despite Queensland staying in the contest in the third term, as both teams exchanged buckets and leading at the final change, the home team charged home in the fourth.

Victoria Navy outscored Queensland by 19 points to seal a historic win, with Ryder Cheesman leading all scorers with 25 points.

U20 WOMEN’S GOLD MEDAL

New South Wales 69 – Queensland 64

One of the best individual performances in a final from Ruby Perkins has led New South Wales to beat Queensland in the under-20 women’s decider.

NSW won 69-64 but the day will forever belong to Perkins.

The point guard was kept scoreless in the first half as Queensland dominated and took a six-point lead at the main break.

But she wouldn’t stay scoreless for much longer.

Perkins landed two threes in the space of 50 seconds after the halftime restart as she lifted NSW back into the contest.

When the third quarter was over she had 18 points, including four threes and a couple of rebounds to give NSW a five-point lead. It rattled Queensland.

And despite Queensland coming back in the final term, leading at one stage 60-59, NSW responded with Perkins leading the charge.

She would score seven points in the final term to finish with 25.

The Maroons entered the contest as the only unbeaten team in the competition and, at times, led by 10 or more points in the first half.

But when Perkins fired there was nothing Queensland could do to stop the run.
