Gold Coast Rollers boys head coach Geoff MacLeod believes his side has what it takes to bring the Basketball Australia U14 Club Championships title back to Queensland.

“We’re very talented, we’re very fast, we’re very fit,” MacLeod said.

“Of course I think we’re good enough to win it ... that’s our goal.

“We’re not going down there to make up numbers, we’re going down there to have a crack.”

The Rollers squad completed their final day of training camp on Tuesday, with skills and game play rounding preparations before their first game on Sunday against Western Australian side Perry Lakes Hawks at midday on Court 3.

“The boys have school and club basketball commitments and a number of them play other sports at a high representative level, (so) managing their workloads has been a high priority,” MacLeod said.

“The kids are pretty excited ... I mean it’s all the best under-14 teams from all over Australia.

“I’m sure every team thinks like that, so we just want to make sure we give our best performance every game.”

Rollers were beaten in the State Championship grand final by one point in overtime against the South West Metro Pirates, but MacLeod is confident they still have the best team in Queensland.

“The finals at state champs, gold medal and bronze medal matches, were two of the best junior games I’ve ever seen,” MacLeod said.

“And I’ve been around a long time.

“They were both by one point and could have gone either way.”

He was complimentary about more than just his own roster, pointing to the bigger picture of Queensland’s rising stars.

“The age group is very talented across the board ... which is good for the future of Queensland basketball,” he said.

“It’s a group of kids that really like to work hard, prepare and do the right things at training.

“Going forward, you’re going to hear a lot of these kids’ names at the higher level.”

Gold Coast will play their Pool E rounds against Perry Lakes Hawks (WA), Knox Raiders (VIC) and South Adelaide Panthers (SA) before each pool is split into championship and challenge divisions depending on standings - where the top two progress to medal contention.

“Because you’ve never seen them before, it’s all new,” MacLeod said of his side’s opponents.

“But we’ve trained up to the minute, so the boys are really fit and they’re confident.

“The Vics are nearly always the favourites, but I think they’re in for a surprise because our kids are good.”

Point Guard

A bottom age organiser who steers them around the court and provides excellence in defense and leadership.

Ashton Flower #12

Combo Guard

Flower provides the team with excellent three-point shooting and aggression on defense, he has great speed and sound decision making.

Kai Salam #8

Point Guard

A very quick, athletic slashing guard who can score in transition and defend multiple positions on the floor.

Gold Coast Rollers had a big run in the Shield last year.

Louis Johnson #39

Small Forward

Johnson plays multiple positions, from shooting guard to small forward. His strengths are his aggression and three-point shooting. He is lethal in transition.

Jermaine O’Riley #7

Small/Power Forward

O’Riley is a bottom age big man blessed with elite speed and athleticism. He has developed very well this year and will be a powerhouse in his top age season.

Fenix Huang #5

Small Forward/Shooting Guard

Blessed with elite speed, Huang defends the entire floor and is a transition weapon. He also rebounds exceptionally well for his size.

Tiago Basile #51

Small Forward

Another very aggressive athlete with exceptional speed and endurance, Basile is in the top echelon of defenders in the country and has a big future in this sport. He is one of the Rollers’ captains.

Matthew Wickham #45

Centre

Wickham’s season was interrupted by injury and he has returned to full fitness for the nationals, which the squad is very excited about. He contests on the boards and provides valuable back-up help in the centre position, Rollers are a totally different team with him fit and firing.

Ronan Walker #78

Power Forward

Walker provides the team with elite finishing around the basket and his rebounding is a significant bonus. Another transition weapon blessed with great speed.

Isaiah (Ice) Fruean #10

Shooting Guard

Ice can score in most situations, either attacking the rim or from the perimeter. He is another of Gold Coast’s speed brigade and is expected to be a headache for opponents in years to come.

Tavite Nasio #26

Centre

Veets is a power-house athlete, blessed with size, speed and athleticism - standing at 6’4 at 13 years old. His future is exciting and as one of the team captains, he leads Rollers from the front.
