St Bernard’s have secured their place in the top flight competition with a strong 35-point win over St Kevin’s on Saturday.

The 16.12 (108) to 10.13 (73) win was a second-half comeback for the Snowdogs, who trailed at both the first breaks before flicking the switch.

Down by 19 points at the long break, the Snowdogs kicked six goals to two in the third term before another seven in the last put the result well beyond doubt.

Forward duo Matthew Watson and Nick Tonge led the charge inside 50 with four goals each, while Ben Huggard and Charlie Vague finished with two apiece.

In the reserves clash, it was a tight 12.3 (75) to 10.7 (67) win for St Kevin’s.

Just six points separated the two sides at either of the opening half breaks in what was a highly entertaining affair throughout.

PREVIEW

The inclusion of Jackson Hately from Essendon’s VFL side has come at the perfect time for St Bernard’s.

The former GWS Giant and Adelaide Crow played his first game of the season last weekend, registering 47 disposals for the Snowdogs as they secured a big win to climb out of the VAFA Premier Men’s relegation zone.

With the Bombers state league season over, the gun midfielder will again be available for a do-or-die clash against St Kevin’s to finish the season.

All of the action will be live streamed on KommunityTV from 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

If Hately and his teammates win this weekend they’ll secure their status in the top flight. Lose and they’ll be hoping Collegians go down to last placed De La Salle who haven’t won a game this season.

“The equation is simple for us,” St Bernard’s coach Steven Alessio said.

“We control our own destiny if we go out and win this game against a quality side.”

Hately’s number last weekend included 23 contested possessions, 11 clearances, seven inside-50s and 171 ranking points.

But his addition to the side meant so much more.

“He’s a class player who had a super game,” Alessio said.

“But what I loved was after the game and in the subsequent days after, the guys were telling me was what a greater leader he was on and off the ground.

“His enthusiasm when he returns to St Bernard’s is always superb.”

The former first round AFL Draft pick wasn’t the only key player to return.

Others included Charlie Vague, Ethan Schumann and Luke Said.

“Those are our core VAFA players, they’re not players we’re waiting on from the VFL,” Alessio said.

“The midfield looked a lot like more what we’re used to.”
