While Jason Akermanis might have stolen all the headlines on the second day of the AFL Masters National Carnival, there was one smaller state which proved it had plenty to say.

The former Lion kicked six goals, while fellow forward Michael Gafa added seven of his own, as Queensland pulled apart South Australia in the second round of the Over-40s.

But while that was taking place on the main field, elsewhere the lads from the island made a huge statement of intent.

Tasmania caused the first shock result of the AFL Masters National Carnival, knocking rivals Victoria Metro out of contention for the Over-35s national title.

While Queensland continued to rubber stamp their title credentials with a 102-point win over Victoria Country/NSW, it was their round one rivals Tasmania who shocked the system by knocking off the reigning champions.

Tassie forward Jade Child kicked a hattrick of majors up front as the island boys ran away with a dominant final quarter to beat their rivals 10.8 (68) to 4.4 (28) on the second day at the carnival.

Queensland are flying high atop the Women’s Over-35s ladder after a thrilling one-point win over a spirited Western Australia side.

In a thrilling fightback, Queensland kicked two goals to one in the final term to squeak home and keep their undefeated start to the AFL Masters National Carnival alive.

Victoria Metro A have remained in the hunt for back-to-back Over 65 national titles after a dominant 74-2 second round win over Western Australia.

The Victorians are also undefeated in the Over 55s top division after a comfortable win over Western Australia on Wednesday, setting up a mouth-watering final game against fellow undefeated outfit Queensland.

PREVIEW

Former Carlton front man, and AFL Masters Victoria president Ian Prendergast, was a late call up to the Over-35s side on Sunday, kicking a goal and relishing being back in the contest.

Despite not playing a competitive football match in more than a decade, Prendergast slotted straight back into the frontline and admitted he would be back there again on Wednesday, as long as the body allowed it.

“I definitely didn’t have the conditioning I would’ve liked to have,” Prendergast said.

“We were struggling for numbers and I had spent a long time sitting on the sidelines watching on from afar. I just happened to have an old pair of boots in the shed, which I tossed in the bag on the way up here just in case.

“It was great to be back in that team environment with the spirit of Masters footy shining through. It was nice to get those competitive juices flowing again.

“I think I pulled up okay, we have done a lot of recovery, probably more recovery than I was used to doing in my AFL days. I will see how I pull up in the morning before running out there.”

Victoria Metro also kick started the state’s quest for back-to-back Over-65s medals in fine form on Sunday, but will have to keep their wits against a wily Western Australia on Wednesday.

Shane Turner booted five majors for the Vic Metro Over-65 As in their big win over South Australia on Sunday before backing up for the Vic Metro Over-65 B side later in the night. Turner will likely prove a target up front again on Wednesday after coming through the opening round unscathed.

AFL Masters Victoria secretary and Over-65s midfielder, Anthony Beck, said there was a few players who pulled up with some body soreness but the Sunshine Coast sunshine had put paid to those problems.

“I went and got a massage, going to the beach and sitting in the pool, it all helps in the recovery,” Beck said.

“I copped a bit of a whack from one of the South Australian boys, they really served it up to us to their credit.

“As far as I can tell most of our guys got through the opening day well.”

The Queensland faithful will be getting right behind their players after a dominant start to the tournament on home soil.

Queensland are leading the way in multiple divisions, and will kick off the action on the main field when their Over-35s side aims to rubber stamp their national title hopes against a combined Victoria Country/NSW side.

Queensland’s Over-45s side will get a major mid-tournament boost on Wednesday, with former Brownlow Medallist and three-time Lions premiership hero Jason Akermanis donning the boots for the first time this week in their clash against Tasmania.

Akermanis, who missed the opening day of the tournament at a Lions 20-year premiership reunion, is also expected to run out for the Queensland Over-40s on Wednesday.

He will form a potent one-two punch up front alongside former grand final foe Jason Cloke.

Don’t miss a minute of the action from the second day of the AFL Masters National Carnival.
